Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A coarse flint scraper likely dating to the late Bronze Age or Iron age c.1000BC - 0BC . Description: The scraper was produced from a broken elongated ovoid primary flake (indicated by the substantial cortex remaining on the dorsal face) from a larger possibly naturally shattered flint (indicated by the multiple step and pitted like fractures on the part sof the edges). The flaking has left substantially conchoidal ripples on both sides of the flint and a substantial bulb of percussion on the ventral face, indicating hard hammer (stone on stone rather than antler, bone or padded …

Object type: DENTICULATE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible flint denticulate of uncertain date, probably Late Bronze to early Iron age date, but a late mesolithic or early Paleothic date cannot be discounted. Description: The denticulate is an irregularly quadrilateral in plan with a wider lower face and slopping sides creating a 'pillow shape'. The tool is formed from a natural flake or accidental removal. It has blunted sides formed by invasive scaled abrupt retouch down one side and then irregular blunting on the other. The distal end has a limited denticulate retouch along it. The flint is very dark grey mottled to black. Th…

An incomplete Middle Bronze Age cast gold spiral-twisted torc dating to the to the Taunton (c.1400-1250 BC), or more probably the Penard (c. 1300-1150 BC), metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age (dates following Roberts et al. 2013). Description: Possibly less than half of the object survives due to two transverse breaks in the bar. The object is made of a rod that has bent into a U-shape in plane. This rod is square in section with accentuated corners created by slightly concave edges. This has been twisted tightly across surviving its length, having 22 twists. Scienti…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy, Late Bronze Age blade, possibly from a sickle, 1250-900 BC. The object is composed of a tapering curve of metal, with a central mid rib that runs the length of the object. Either side of the mid rib the object tapers gently in cross section to form the blades. The object has an even green patina all over. Similar complete sickles can be found in Savory 1980 fig.46 no.6 and 7. These are dated to the late Bronze Age and were from a hoard near Llynfawr, Glam.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a copper-alloy ingot of probable late Bronze Age date, c. 1150 - 600BC. Part of a plano-convex (bun) discoid ingot possibly suggesting the production in a bowl furnace rather than a mould. The upper is flat and the bottom is convex. Only a small section remains with a part of the original edge and very worn irregular breaks on the other sides. The section of the outside edge is too small to idenify the complete diameter. The ingot is pitted likely due to a mix of impurities in its matrix and the uneven natural material used to create the bowl in which it was cast. …

A large D-shaped flint scraper of uncertain date possibly Late Bronze Age to Iron Age c1000-0BC. Description: The scraper is formed from a large D-shaped flint and rather than being a worked flake is a bifacially worked 'core tool'. It is itrangular in cross-section with the base being rounded. The scraper has been shaped by hard hammer flaking and has a scraping edge along its flat edge. The retouch can be dsecribed as invasive scaled semi-abrupt. There is more retouch along one of the faces partially parralel to the scraping edge which has been carried out to blunt this edge. The…

A probable Late Bronze Age hoard of 90 ingot fragments. Description:All ingot fragments have some soil attached which may affect their final weight. A green patina is present on most fragments due to the copper alloy corrosion (Nos. 1-81 and 86-90). The other fragments (Nos. 82-85) do not have a green patina, probably due to the presence of a higher tin percentage. A bevelled edge can be seen on some fragments while others have a softer, round edge. A few examples have bumps on the bottom surface resulting from the surface the molten copper alloy was poured onto, and one fragmen…
