A fragment of gold ribbon of Bronze Age date (c.2350-800BC)
Description: The fragment comprises a strip of sheet gold with transverse breaks at either end. One of these is a 'clean' cut so that the profile of the cross-section of the sheet is clearly visible, while the other is squashed and jagged. On one side of the sheet, a single deep score has been inflicted onto the gold. This runs down the centre, from one end to the other, suggesting this was done prior to the cutting. The other side is heavily abraded with linear markings that all run in one direction. This appears to hav…

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy ring with a D cross section of possible late Bronze Age to Roman date. The ring is solid, with smooth surface; has an external diameter of 22.2mm and internal diameter of 13.5mm. The hoop is 4.4mm thick and 4.9mm wide although varying in thickness around the ring, which may be the result of differential wear. Such simple objects found in isolation are very difficult to attribute to a specific function or date. They often show signs of preferential wear suggest substantial pull was frequently applied to them suggesting possible horse harness or industrial use.
