Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Penannular gold ring comprising a gold covering over a base metal core; this is usually a copper alloy. The piece has fairly fine stripes, probably of yellow and paler gold, but this decorative effect is extremely worn and heavily stained red-brown. The central area and gap are plugged with corrosion products which also form an excrescence on one side of the gap. External diameter 20x18mm; internal diameter about 7mm; width of gap about 2mm; breadth 7mm; weight 13.86 grams. Rings of this type date to circa 1150-750 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small fragment of gold, rather crudely worked, although some of the dents are likely to be damage. One end is a narrow, twisty rod of round section, possibly an original terminal. This flares into a 'tab' the end of which is not certainly intact. It is therefore possible it continued as a longer ribbon. This tab is flat between gently convex sides which are thickened as beadings of triangular section. Extant length 24.3 mm; max, width 12.2 mm; diameter of rod 2.2-3.2 mm; max. thickness beadings 2.4 mm; thickness of ribbon centre 0.5 mm; weight 3.5 g The uncertainty as to whether thi…

Small, cast gold 'finger-ingot', roughly plano-convex in section. Cut marks are visible (possibly done with a chisel in antiquity). Comparable pieces were found in a hoard from Mooghaun, County Clare, Ireland, where other items are datable to the Late Bronze Age. This example is probably of a similar date.

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small, solid penannular ring with irregularly facetted section. Each flattened face has one row of pointillé dots and there is another on the outer face; between, there are rows of finely executed oblique strokes in opposing directions; in places the latter are very worn.
Maximum external diameter 11mm; maximum internal diameter 7mm; breadth 2mm; weight 1.19 grams.
X-ray fluorescence analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content of 79%.
Identification
The piece may be ascribed to the Late Bronze Age penannular ring series (circa 1150-750BC), a…

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete late Bronze Age gold plated penannular ring, dating to 1150 - 800BC. The ring is circular in shape and in cross section, with two flat terminals. Between the terminals is copper alloy corrosion, suggesting that the main body of the ring is copper alloy plated with gold. One of the terminals is damaged, with the surface cracked and partly missing showing the inside of the ring. The surface of the ring is a light yellow gold colour, with slightly darker stripes running across the ring in bands.

A fragment of gold ribbon of Bronze Age date (c.2350-800BC)
Description: The fragment comprises a strip of sheet gold with transverse breaks at either end. One of these is a 'clean' cut so that the profile of the cross-section of the sheet is clearly visible, while the other is squashed and jagged. On one side of the sheet, a single deep score has been inflicted onto the gold. This runs down the centre, from one end to the other, suggesting this was done prior to the cutting. The other side is heavily abraded with linear markings that all run in one direction. This appears to hav…

An incomplete cast gold bracelet of Bronze Age date (1300-1100 BC).
Description: The object is a loosely twisted, square-section rod. At one end the rod finishes at a cut, while at the other its finishes in a tapered tip. Here, the rod straightens slightly but appears wavy, suggesting it has been untwisted. The surfaces of the rod are very rough and dimpled with some hammer and file marks visible.

A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC.
Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.

Workflow stage: Published
Short length of distorted gold rod of approximately circular cross-section. Both ends appear to have been cut using a chisel. Diameter of rod 5mm; weight 3.21g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content of approximately 55-58%, a silver content of approximately 40-44% and a copper content of more than 1%.
Possibly a distorted solid penannular ring, the diameter of which would have been approximately 13mm. Should this be the case, the piece could fit morphologically into the category of Bronze Age penannular rings. These are generally date…

Fragment of a plain gold rod. The gold rod is circular in section and is rounded at one end and broken at the other. The surface is smooth and only slightly pitted. There is no decoration though some evidence for small hammer marks on the rod. Due to its undiagnostic nature it does not represent Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).

Cup with conical body tapering to an omphalos base; the rim is flaring; a riveted strap handle links the rim and upper body. The rivet plates are lozenge shaped and the handle has decorative ridges parallel with its edges. The rim bears a row of dots punched from the outer surface and is otherwise plain; between this plain zone and a further plain zone at the base the cup is corrugated. The cup has been crushed, particularly on one side; this might have resulted from a single blow from agricultural machinery.

Length of thick gold wire or rod. The piece has a neat circular section except where chopped at either end. Cutting or chiselling from opposite ends has given the ends a wedge-like profile. The piece is 37.25mm long, with a diameter of between 2.86mm to 2.60mm. It weighs 3.27g. The rod is undiagnostic, but its composition is consistent with a Bronze Age date.

A Late Bronze Age gold plated penannular ring or {ring money} of oval section. Date {c.1150-800 BC}. The ring has flat terminals with unevern surfaces. A similar penannular ring from Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, was reported through the Treasure Act, although this one has decorative striping (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 21; ref. 22/2005 T358).

Description: Possibly less than half of the object survives due to two transverse breaks in the bar. The object is made of a rod that has bent into a U-shape in plane. This rod is square in section with accentuated corners created by slightly concave edges. This has been twisted tightly across surviving its length, having 22 twists.

Both manufacturing technique and composition are consistent with a Bronze Age date, although precise analogues for the type are presently lacking. Gold ribbon ornaments are known from the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1300-1100 BC, but the ribbed effect is achieved here by grooving (cf the piece from Ilam, Staffs. (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 20, no.14). Solder is used at this date in the…

A heavily distorted fragment of gold sheet, probably from a strip or 'ribbon' of Bronze Age date, c. 2350 - 800 BC
Description: The object has been folded several times and is creased and torn in several locations, all presumably in antiquity. It is difficult to establish the original form of the object owing to its current condition, but it was probably a band with straight sides, the shape of the terminal cannot be distinguished.
