An incomplete copper-allow Bronze Age awl, dating to 1150-800 BC. The shank has a square cross-section at its middle and it is double ended. Starting from the middle square cross-section it continues tapering towards a chisel-like and broken end, while on the opposite side it turns into an oval cross section ending in a incomplete tip. The chisel-like part is heavily abraded and slightly bent sideways. Cf with SF-C1752A on the PAS database. Length: 63.63 mm Width, at its centre: 4.23 mm Max thickness of the oval cross-sectioned part: 4.33 mm Max thickness of the chisel-…

One end of a cast copper alloy awl or tracer. The centre of the awl, which is sub-square in cross-section, measures 4.8mm by 5.09mm. This centre is at the transition from a circular section to a square cross section. To one side it tapers, gradually at first then increasingly, to a circular sectioned point at the complete end (awl). The other end is rectangular in section and tapers gradually to the old break (3.7mm by 3.9mm) but probably originally ended in a rectangular sectioned point (tracer end). It is 31.77mm long and weighs 3.79 grams.

A Bronze Age to Roman copper-alloy awl, one end of which is pointed and circular in section. The awl thickens to the opposite end which is flattened and chisel-like. Awls are very difficult to date and a wide range of dates is suggested here.

A cast copper-alloy tracer awl of probable Bronze Age date. One end of the awl is square in section and triangular in profile tapering to a flattened point or blade that is slightly curved perhaps as a result of post-depositional damage. The opposite end is cylindrical in form tapering to a sharp point, and with slightly faceted surfaces. It has a dark green patina that is pitted in places with some corrosion at both ends. The entire object measures 38.47mm in length, 4.98mm in width/thickness, and 3.12g in weight. This awl is likely to be Bronze Age in date, c.2550-800 BC, althoug…

A copper-alloy awl of possible Bronze Age date. The widest point of the awl is a short distance past its halfway point, from where it tapers in both directions. One side is of rectangular section, bent and incomplete; the intact side is of circular section, its diameter declining towards the point. The corroded surface retains patches of a dull green patination. Dimensions: 58.6mm long, 5mm high, 4.7mm thick. Weight: 5.26g. There is some debate as to the date of such awls, which probably first appeared in the Late Bronze Age but could conceivably have continued to have been made…

A cast copper-alloy probable awl of uncertain date. It is a metal rod which is square in section and tapers at both ends. One end finished in a wedge shape and the other end is missing due to old breaks. It is bent due to old damage and there are possibly two longitudinal grooves on one side. It measures 63.23mm in length, 4.08mm in width, 3.47mm in thickness and weighs 6.07g. It is similar to other awls recorded on the database, for example SF-6FC795 and BH-50C527.

Bronze Age copper alloy awl. The object has a dark brown patina broken by scratches showing as light brown around the sharp end, and by green corrosion at the very tip of the sharp end, and in a small spot on the side. The point of the awl is very blunt and is circular in section. The section becomes sub-square two-thirds of the way along the awl's length, and then slopes to a thin sub-rectangular section at the other end. The object is 55mm long, 4mm wide, 4mm thick and weighs 4.67g.

A Prehistoric – Roman copper alloy awl, probably dating 800BC-AD410. The awl tapers to a point at one end and a flattened curved (spatulate) end at the other, the mid-section has a square cross-section. The spatulate end is bent to one side probably due to damage. The copper alloy has a roughened surface and a dark green patina. Sally Worrell suggested a broad date range of Bronze Age to Roman and thought it was probably from the Iron Age – Roman period. Dimensions: length: 75.70mm; width: 5.67mm; thickness: 5.67mm; weight: 8.43g. Identification by Sally Worrell, PAS Find…

Cast copper alloy object, probably a Bronze Age awl. The awl is essentially a shaft; rectangular in section, with a swelling approximately two thirds along its length, which gives it an elongated, flattened lentoid shape in plan and profile. The longer end of the awl, before the swelling, tapers to a semi-sharp point, whilst the other, shorter portion terminates with a broad blunt point. The original surface survives only in small patches with an even mid green patina, whilst exposed surfaces (the majority of the object) are a brighter green. The tool is 37.82mm long, 3.24mm wide and 3…
