Copper alloy metalworking debris. An oval fragment of solidified copper alloy melt of plano-convex section, possibly from the casting ingate at the top of the mould used for casting a small object. The oval flat surface would represent the upper side with shrinkage lines resulting from the cooling of molten metal. The ingate would be broken from the object cast and was presumably intended to go back into the melting pot. This is an unusual example of metalworking debris whose form places it at a particular stage of the casting process, rather than the more common evidence for spillage.…

An undecorated copper alloy bead of unknown date, probably Bronze Age to Early Medieval, 2400 BC - AD 1066. The bead is annular in shape and circular in cross-section, with a central round hole filled with concretion. The bead has a diameter of 9.7mm, is 4.1mm thick and weighs 1.66g.  The central hole is 4.3mm in diameter. The patina is grey-green and reminiscent of prehistoric or Roman metalwork. Beads are very difficult to date and examples of this form were used from the Bronze Age Age to the Early Medieval periods.  Without further finds to give context, a posi…

A fragment of copper alloy in two parts of uncertain date or purpose. It may be a ferrule and may be Bronze Age to Post Medieval in date. Fragment 1 is curved, sub-circular in cross section and has an almost solid core, although a separate, thin central core is in evidence, which can just be seen at each end of the find. This also appears to be of copper alloy. The find has a pale green patina and some corrosion products adhering to it. Fragment 2 is similar in shape, although it is a shorter fragment, has a solid core, but does not have the separate thin central core of…

A complete cast copper alloy biconical bead probably dating from the Bronze Age to Medieval period (c.2500 BC-AD 1500). The object is torus shaped in plan with a circular perforation. The inner edges of the perforation are slightly convex and the outer edges of the hoop angled to form a central apex.  The surface has a grey-green patina. Diameter: 24.3mm; thickness: 8.1mm; weight: 15.54g. Beads of this kind are difficult to date outside of excavated contexts. A Bronze Age to Early Medieval copper alloy bead. The bead is a torus shape being circular in plan with a central perforation. In cross section the bead is oval with very worn sides both on its exterior and in the central hole. It has a medium brown patina. There appears to be a dotted pattern around the central whole on both sides.   The bead is 22.4mm in diameter, the central hole is 7.6mm in diameter and the bead is 8.2mm thick. It weighs 16.10 grams.  Without doing a comparative analysis of the alloy used in their manufacture, dating …

A fragmentary cast copper alloy ring, possibly from a harness, of uncertain date. The ring is missing over half of the hoop in old damage with surviving measurements 25.5mm long x 7.2mm max diameter. The ring is roughly D-shaped/sub-triangular in section with a shallow central ridge along the outer surface and small angular wear facets visible at the breaks. There is no visible evidence for surface decoration. It is difficult to determine function with so little remaining, but it may be a fragment of a harness ring. The metal has a smooth dark green mottled patina and weighs 6.51g. XR…

A complete opaque globular annular glass bead of unknown date, Bronze Age to Modern, about 2200 BC to AD 1900, but most liekly to be Roman or Early Medieval. The bead is made out of opaque sky-blue glass. It is sub-spherical in shape, with convex sides, and the ends slightly flattened. The glass has been trailed in a spiral to form it, leaving faint striations in the surface. The bead has a diameter of 9.3mm, is 7.8mm long, and weighs 0.79g. The central hole is 2.6mm diameter. There are many examples on the database, see SWYOR-C01D56 for example.

Copper alloy awl/point. The artefact is a long thin rod that is split into two sections. The first section is the forward edge, has a pointed tip that expands to a waist in the centre of the rod; this section has a circular cross-section.  The rear half is thinner than the forward section and has a rectangular cross-section with a flat terminal, this section would most likely have formed a tang that was inserted into a handle.

Copper-alloy ring, probably a finger ring, of uncertain but not recent date. It is not perfectly circular but slightly pointed on one side (like the profile of an egg). It is oval in cross-section, thickest and widest at one side and tapering in both dimensions, at first minimally and then more significantly until there is a short slightly straightened length on the pointed side, as if it had been stretched when molten. It is patinated dark green with internal pale green mottles. Diameter: 27.5mm x 25.2mm. Width: 3.8 - 5.9mm Thickness: 2.4 - 4.1mm. Weight: 8.3g

A flat copper alloy object of possibly middle Bronze Age date (about 1600BC-1000BC), but also potentially later. It is possibly an awl, chisel or leather working tool but it is not diagnostic. It is flat and rectangular in cross-section. The sides taper. One end is 21.6mm wide and blunt. The sides taper inwards for about one third of the length. The angle then changes to a more gentle tapering which continues for the rest of the length, terminating in a rounded, slightly asymmetrical blunt point at the other end. There is no evidence of attachment, nor of hamme…

An amorphous glob of gold, that survives as evidence of gold working of an uncertain date. Description: The gold is very pure, with a slightly pitted surface of a solidified fluid. One end of the glob is larger and heavier with a long neck to a small round terminal. Discussion: The high purity, pitted surface and solidified fluid form confirms that this gold has been (re)worked rather than being an example of a naturally occurring nugget of gold ore. As the gold is undiagnostic and cannot be proven to be more than 300 years old, the object does not qualify as Treasure.

A complete copper-alloy awl of Bronze Age to medieval date, c.1250 BC - AD 1500. The awl appears to be complete. The awl has a conical shaft which runs for 18mm, after which the shank becomes rectangular in section and tapers to the terminal. The awl has a mid green patina and has a smoother surface at the conical end.  Copper alloy awls are known from the Bronze Age,but as the shape of awls changed little over time dating is difficult. Length 57.95mm, thickness 3.93mm, weight 3.49g.
