A copper alloy bar of uncertain function dating from the Bronze Age to Post-Medieval period c. 2500 BC - AD 1800. The bar is cylindrical in form with one smooth end which is slightly down-turned at the edges, perhaps from being struck. The opposing end is irregular and uneven with a possible design comprising a raised square linear border of three sides with the corners meeting the edge of the rim. At the open end of the square each line angles to the left then recurves back on either side, looping back to the side walls of the square. The interior is pitted and irregular. The si…

A small piece of silver waste. The date it was created and its original purpose are no longer discernable. It could date from anytime between the Bronze Age and the Modern period. The object has a granular, hackly texture Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, it cannot be securely dated as being over 300 years old and as such would appear to fall outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy 'button' or strap fitting of uncertain date, possibly Late Bronze Age/ earliest Iron Age (c. 900-600 BC). All original edges are missing due to recent-ish damage. The object is circular and solid with a prominent nipple to one face and an incomplete loop to the other (reverse). The loop consists of two broken vertical projections, again recent-ish damage, with a deep C-sectioned groove between them, running the length of the diameter. The metal is dark grey in colour and pitted to the front, while the reverse is smoother and shiny. The object measures 11.4…

An abraded and corroded copper alloy fragment, possibly from a Bronze Age ingot or from casting waste, but undiagnostic in its present form. There are deep grooves on two sides the object, however it is not clear if these are functional or from casting flaws.

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a, cast copper alloy, ring, possibly a bracelet or armlet of Bronze Age date, 2000-900 BC. The fragment is part of a circumferal ring. The breaks in the ring are old, being quite worn and corroded. In cross section the ring is a pointed oval. There is no surface decoration on the piece. The surface is patinated red/green. As the object is incomplete it is difficult to be certain on its date or function, the innumerable uses for rings of all sizes makes them difficult to classify.

An undatable (Bronze Age to post-medieval, c. 2000 BC - AD 1800) probable solidified copper alloy droplet, presumably a by-product of metal-working. It is 'bun-shaped', with a roughly circular outline and shallowly-domed in profile. There is a slight sinking at the centre. The underside is pitted but smooth, with two circular holes 0.9mm and 2mm in diameter. The larger is 1mm deep while the smaller is shallower (it is not possible to measure the depth). They do not pierce through to the other face of the object, which is even and smooth. The metal is dark blue-green in colour. The ob…

County: West Sussex

A tapering object composed of copper-alloy and cast, possibly a worn tool, either a chisel or awl of uncertain date. The object is sub-cylindrical, with one wedge-shaped end and one end that is sub-circular in cross-section. Due to its shape and dark green patina, it is possible that this is a very worn Middle to Late Bronze Age chisel, c. 1600-801 BC; however, similar items are known to date to later periods, therefore a more general Bronze Age to Medieval date is given below.

A complete cast copper-alloy ring, probably a harness or suspension loop. The ring is circular in section and decorated with one deep transverse groove on the outer surface. The hole is slightly off-centre and the body of the ring is differentially wide with a maximum of 4.4 mm and a minimum of 2.7 mm. The ring measures and overall 16.6mm diameter, 4.9mm maximum thickness, 3.5 mm minimum thickness and it weighs 3.64 grams. Although Bronze Age-Roman cast copper alloy beads with similar transverse grooves are known, the distinct and apparently deliberate difference between the two s…

A complete cast copper alloy bead of uncertain Bronze Age to Early Medieval date. The bead is biconical in form with flattened botton surfaces and a central circular perforation. The majority of the surface has a dark green patina which shows some signs of corrosion. It measures 17.7mm in diameter, 9.15mm thick and weighs 11.3grams. The central perforation is 5.2mm in diameter. These types of beads are produced throughout a long range range, dating commonly from the Bronze Age to the Early Medieval period; therefore the date is uncertain.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and worn fragment of an uncertain cast copper-alloy artefact of uncertain date. It has two asymmetrical edges or possible flanges, one of which is 20.1mm in thickness tapering to 11.6mm, whilst the other is 15.7mm to 10.5mm. The central recessed element is broadly flat and creates an 'I' shaped section, and is 7.3mm thick. The object has been recorded as it potentially could be a fragment of a badly cast Middle Bronze Age palstave; however, the middle area is unusually thin for a palstave septum and the casting line at one side is unusual for such an object. Metallurgical…

A worn and corroded cast copper-alloy fragment of an unidentified object of uncertain date, probably Bronze Age-Medieval (c. 2150-1499 AD). The fragment is roughly D-shaped in plan, and broadly T-shaped in cross-section; the surface of the fragment is flanged, almost similar to a Bronze Age palstave. A small sub-triangular shaped divet is positioned near the upper portion of the T-shaped cross-section, which could be a casting bubble. The patina of the fragment is of a deep even green and similar to objects dating from the Bronze Age - Medieval period. It is possible that this frag…

Copper alloy casting waste in two fragments, of uncertain date. The larger fragment measures 33.98mm long by 23.39mm wide by 8.43mm thick; it weighs 13.89g. The other fragment measures 12.30mm long by 7.13mm wide by 7.32mm thick; it weighs 1.51g. Both fragments have had small sections taken off by the finder to observe colouration and are bronze in colour; the external surface of the larger piece has a very silvery colour, potentially high tin content. These casting waste fragments come from a field with a very high concentration of Roman finds; as such, it is possible that they date…

A very worn and incomplete sub-spherical object made of stone, probably a sandstone bead, of uncertain date. The object is asymmetrically-shaped and sub-spherical in plan, with a sub-oval cross-section. It has a cylindrical hole drilled through the centre and a series of haphazardly placed incised dashes throughout the external surface, which could be purposeful but may be a result of natural faults or post-depositional damage. The underside is either damaged or purposefully flattened to a degree. It measures 17.9 mm diameter, 14.4 mm in height and weighs 4.56 grams. If the obje…

County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified cast copper alloy object of unknown date. The object is sub-rectangular in plan. It is curved on both sides along both its length and across its width. From its centre it tapers inwards very slightly from centre to end. The sides are rounded and the ends are chisel-like. In the centre of either face is a short integral protruding stub, which is circular in cross section. The edges of both sides have flash marks from the casting process. The surface has a mottled green to grey colour and it is probably made of a copper alloy with a higher tin or lead content.

A corroded and complete cast copper alloy annular bead, of unknown date. The bead has an angular D-shape or sub-triangular cross section and is pierced with a central hole approximately 5 mm in diameter. The slight grey patination colour to the metal suggests that the bead has an increased tin content. It measures 11.31mm in diameter, 5.11mm thick and weighs 2.1grams. This particular bead has been found with a wealth of objects dating to the Roman period (c. 43-410 AD). However, as these types of beads have been manufactured from the Bronze Age to the Post Medieval period a posi…
