Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper-alloy ring, probably a finger ring, of uncertain but not recent date. It is not perfectly circular but slightly pointed on one side (like the profile of an egg). It is oval in cross-section, thickest and widest at one side and tapering in both dimensions, at first minimally and then more significantly until there is a short slightly straightened length on the pointed side, as if it had been stretched when molten. It is patinated dark green with internal pale green mottles. Diameter: 27.5mm x 25.2mm. Width: 3.8 - 5.9mm Thickness: 2.4 - 4.1mm. Weight: 8.3g

Copper alloy bead-like object of unknown date. It is barrel-shaped, or like a sphere with a cap cut off at each pole by a pair of parallel planes, revealing the sub-circular openings of the internal void. The void is not quite cylindrical but appears to follow the external contour to some extent, being longitudinally concave and of wider diameter in the middle. The diameter of the openings seems too large to be a bead. It may be a collar for a rod-like implement. It is patinated dark brown. Length (opening to opening): 15.1mm. External diameter: 18.2mm. Internal diameter of openings: …

A copper-alloy spiral or coiled finger-ring, probably dating from the Middle Bronze Age to the Roman era (c.1500 BC to AD 410).  This finger ring is made from a strip of copper alloy with a D-shaped cross section, that is coiled with three turns. The ends of the strip are cut to form points. The ring is pitted and has a dark reddish brown patina. Diameter: 24.89 mm; Thickness: 2.61 mm; Weight: 9.29g Spiral or coil finger-rings appear to start in the Bronze Age and continue, gaining popularity, through the Iron Age and Roman period. They also occur in early Anglo-Saxon graves.

A copper alloy ring with oval cross section and slightly uneven thickness and width of unknown date. The ring is oval in shape being 27.5mm long by 25.3mm wide. The ring has a diameter of 31.3mm and weighs 4.62 grams. The band is 3.6mm wide at its widest point and is 4.6mm thick. Such rings are largely undatable and can be as early as Iron Age, but it is most likely a Medieval to Post-Medieval horse harness ring, possibly to link two straps given how it is worn in two places.

A copper alloy ring with hexagonal cross section and slightly uneven thickness and width of unknown date. The ring is oval in shape being 31.3mm long by 30.6mm wide. The object is undecorated but has long striations around its outer face, probably from filing or wear. The ring has a diameter of 31.3mm and weighs 5.36 grams. The band is 4.2mm wide at its widest point and is 2.8mm thick. Such rings are largely undatable and can be as early as Iron Age, but it is most likely a Medieval to Post-Medieval horse harness ring, possibly to link two straps given how it is worn in two …

Unidentified copper-alloy object of uncertain date. It is a rod, approximately sixty millimetres in length and four millimetres in diameter and fairly straight for the most part, with a gradual bend of perhaps forty degrees at one end followed by a flat triangular terminal. The other end terminates in a worn break. The rod is somewhere between oval and rounded-lozengiform in cross-section for most of its length. Within ten millimetres of the triangle however, it has developed six hammered facets. There are two opposing broader facets on the same planes and in continuity with the…

Description: Complete gold ingot, long with rounded ends and oval cross-section. One surface is smooth with a few large dents; the other is pitted with very many small dents. One end is slightly wider and substantially thicker due to a rise in the pitted surface; the smoother surface is fairly flat. The colour is very slightly pale, suggesting a relatively impure gold. Dimensions: Length, 40.9mm. Maximum width, 13.3mm. Maximum thickness, 8.8mm. Weight 37.39g.  Discussion: This ingot is quite distinctive; it is long, with rounded ends and cross-section, o…

Incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. It is a disc, 27.0mm in diameter and 1.6mm thick, with openwork voids arranged in two concentric sub-circular rings, and four extant bosses on one face. There are three complete voids in the outer ring and a fourth which has been truncated by a worn break. The inner ring contains four smaller complete voids. These are approximately evenly spaced so that each quarter contains one small and one large void. None of the voids are precisely the same size or shape as each other. The inner ones are each a variation of oval, while…

Description: Length of thick gold wire of circular cross-section, with a fresh granular break at one end and roughly rounded at the other (possibly an old break). It is curved along its length, forming about half of a circle about 35mm in diameter. The outer surface of the curve is smooth but the inner has slight longitudinal facets, as if hammered to shape.  It is slightly crushed and bent at the rounded end, and the damage has caused cracking to the metal here. Dimensions: Unbent length 50mm, bent into half-circle measuring 32.1 x 37.9mm. Diameter of rod 4.1…

Copper alloy unidentified object of unknown date. It is possibly an ingot or a piece of casting waste. It’s a thick near-circular disc with parallel sides. One face is convex and has a rounded intersection with the sides. The other is broadly flat and has a right-angled intersection with the sides. The object has has suffered from a lot of surface damage and many fragments and chunks are broken away from the edges and both faces. Near the centre of the flat face there is a circular depression which has sloping sides and a potentially flat base, but this is obscured by damage. There …

A copper alloy miniture wheel, possibly a votive model dating from the Late Bronze Age to Early Roman period, but it could also be a Post Medieval pastry jigger or component from a Post Medieval to Modern toy. The object is an openwork circular disc with four spokes and a central lozenge shaped hub, perforated by a sub-square hole. The hub and spokes are square in cross-section. The spokes narrower in the middle and flare towards the ends in plan. The rim of the "wheel" is wider than the spokes, and is bevelled on both faces, so the outer edge is pointed, making a triangle in cross…
