Copper alloy votive socketed axehead that has a short rectangular frame with a loop projecting from the top rear corner. The forward edge has been truncated resulting in the loss of the blade. On the opposite end is the socket, this end is oval with a shallow rectangular shot in the centre.
This scaled down model of the larger socketed axe of the Late Bronze Age and is a Robinson (1995) Type III, (Robinson 1995 WA&NHM 88). These artefacts are normally dated to the late Iron Age to Early Roman period and are likely to be religious offerings with many either being found in grav…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy possible awl, Bronze Age to Medieval in date.
This object is square in section and an elongated triangle in plan as it tapers to a blunt point. The opposite terminal is a flat unbroken surface, with rounded edges. The surface has a dark green and mottled brown patina.
The artefact is probably an awl, possibly a leather working awl, but this is not certain. Due to the condition of the surface it probably dates from the Bronze Age through to the Medieval period.

County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy spiral finger ring possibly dating from the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1500-1150 BC) but probably to the Roman Period (AD43-410).
The finger ring is formed from an copper alloy bar which is sub-lozenge shaped in cross-section bent into two turns. The outer surface has a central ridge and the inner surface gently convex. One end tapers into a point and the other in an uneven bifid terminal which is probably a worn break,. The ring is slightly worn with a mid green patina.

Description: A complete cast penannular finger ring made from a flat sheet of gold with rounded ends. The surface forms three parallel ribs running along the hoop: one along the central line and one either side. The hoop is distorted to sub-circular shape with the terminals twisting in opposite directions. Both terminals are rounded, one seemingly complete and one with a tapered terminal possibly suggesting minor loss. On both terminals the ribs reduce in appearance towards the terminal, seemingly from manufacture rather than wear. The interior of the hoop is plain and smooth.

A cast copper alloy awl of uncertain date. The awl has a 32mm long circular sectioned tapering point that narrows into a bent square sectioned tang 2.3mm thick which flattens slightly towards the end. The awl has a black patina and a pitted surface. Awls are difficult to date out of context, and this example could date from the Bronze Age right up to the Medieval period. If the awl is roman, it could be classified as a Manning’s (1985) Type 4b.

A Bronze Age to Roman copper alloy awl, probably dating to c. 2,400 BC - AD 410. A bar of copper alloy with a circular sectioned point at one end, transitioning into a square section at the mid point, the other point is flattened in profile forming a probable tang.
Length 64.4mm; Width 3.9mm; Thickness 3.6mm; weight 3.66g.
Comparable awls are found as Grave goods from the Beaker period onwards, although these tend to be slightly more defined in form. Outside of an archaeological context an undiagnostic find cannot be dated precisely.

A cast copper alloy miniature object or pendant in the form of an axe, probably dating from the Roman period, although a Late Bronze age or Iron Age chronology cannot be ruled out, consequently a broad range of 1200 BC – AD 410 is suggested. The axe, of broadly sub-rectangular section, is thickest at the butt and tapers in section to a curved asymmetrical cutting edge. The upper edges has a shallow curve, while the lower edge has a steeper curve and accommodates a perforated loop towards the butt. The object's olive green patina is patchy and corroded. It has a length of 25.80mm, a …

The two short faces are incised with decoration in the form of an elongated and pointed oval of small dots, surrounded by four incised lines and another border of dots. The broad side is undecorated and curved, with a radius appropriate for the object to be a fragment of a copper alloy bracelet. The degree of wear and the patina are appropriate for a Roman or prehistoric origin.
