Almost complete barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green. H, S, (1980) type Sutton b, closest in outline to examples i and j (page 122, fig. 45), of off-white patinated flint with the numerous small inclusions within the flint a mid-grey colour, one face has three small spots of rusty iron, probably from contact with agricultural machinery. One barb is nearly complete; possibly the tiny tip is missing, the other barb is chipped at the tip, this is an ancient break as one of the iron stains is on the surface of the break, the tang is broken obliquely but would have been little longer than t…

A flint arrowhead. A barbed and tanged type made on a tertiary flake of pale grey-brown flint. It has a glossy patina. A elongated triangular shape with a long central tang and short barbs. The notches forming the barbs are curved and relatively shallow. One face has invasive, scalar pressure flaking along both edges. The other face has some invasive pressure flaking but less regularly applied around a pre-exisiting deeper flake scar. There is slight damage to the tip. Date: Bronze Age Dimensions: 29.63 mm x 18.99 mm x 3.84 mm Weight: 1.88 g

An incomplete barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green, H.S. (1980) possible Sutton type dating to the Early Bronze Age c. 2500 - 1500 BC. The arrowhead appears to have been discarded mid knapping. The flint is glossy, mid to dark brown, with flake scars on the front surface, while the reverse has ripples and irregular scaring.  Barbed and Tanged arrowheads are associated with the Bronze Age Beaker Period, c. 2500 - 1500 BC and are usually found within Beaker burials. Measurements: Length: 30.48mm Width: 20.52mm Thickness: 5.38mm Weight: 2.09g. See Butler (2005) pg…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the Middle to Late Bronze Age c. 1600-800 BC. The arrowhead is broadly triangular, flat and lentoid in cross-section. The piece is broadly symmetrical with a broken tip, two broken barbs and between these a broken tang. The edges of the blade are bevelled with unevenly worn blades. The tip of the blade is broken. The patina across the object is light brown. There are some areas of lamination, these being darker brown in colour. The arrowhead measures 27.9mm long, 25.4mm wide, 1.8mm thic…

An incomplete flint Arrowhead of Bronze Age date (2500-1200 BC). The object is a barbed and tanged form and is sub-triangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The object has two semi-circular notches removed by pressure flaking, on the proximal edge. The notches create a sub-rectangular tang, projecting between them. The left-hand barb is missing. The dorsal surface retains a large amount of cortex and has short, scaled flaking along all edges. The ventral surface has short, scaled flaking along all edges. The flint is dark grey in colour, the cortex is light brown in col…

An almost complete barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green, H.S. (1980) Sutton type dating to the Early Bronze Age 2500 - 1500 BC. The barbs are incomplete, and the tip of the arrowhead is missing, otherwise the arrowhead is in good condition.  The flint is glossy, dark brown, both faces are completely covered with invasive pressure flaking scars that overlap in the middle of each face, a larger flake scar on one side may indicate trace of original flake blank which the arrowhead was knapped from. Barbed and Tanged arrowheads are associated with the Bronze Age Beaker Period, …

Almost a complete barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green, H.S. (1980) Green low type, though the barbs are around the same length as the tang (Green lows have longer barbs than the tang) the general form of the notches and the slightly drooping barbs fit within that group, there is a tiny amount of recent damage; one corner of the (rectangular) tang is missing as is the very tip if the point, otherwise it is in pristine condition, the flint is glossy, dark brown/grey with a very slight misty patination to parts of the surface, both faces are completely covered with invasive pressure flak…

Tertairy ?soft hammer struck flake with the bulb of percussion removed and neatly trimmed to a triangular shape by direct, steep percussion predominantly to the dorsal face, of slightly mottled dark grey flint with no patination. This is very likely to be an unfinished arrowhead, the profile is very straight for a struck flake, and the thickness is within the perfect range (4.6 mm), the trimming has evened out the curve already, the flake seems to have been worked into a blank then misplaced before the piece was extensively pressure flaked to its final shape, it is very likely this was…

Early Bronze Age, 2,350 to 1,500 BC.

Small barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green, H, S, (1980) type Sutton b, with the barbs just shorter than the tang, made from a struck flake, unusually with the bulb of percussion originally orientated at the tang (they tend to be orientated to the point), the concentric ripples to the ventral face are somewhat exaggerated. The flint is now patinated orange/brown from contact with iron oxides in the soil, The main shaping was quickly pressure flaked to a fairly steep angle, as opposed to the invasive pressure flaking on larger examples; this is probably due to the small size of the arro…

Incomplete barbed and tanged arrowhead, of slightly brown patinated mottled grey flint, both faces are extensively pressure flaked with the flake terminations passing over each other at the centre, no sign of the original surface of the flake blank that was used to make this. The tang has survived, though both barbes are missing, one side has been snapped along the axis of the length, taking the barb with it, both the breaks appear to be transverse bending fractures and not impact damage, they are probably post depositional from having heavy agricultural machinery driven over the top. …

Barbed and tanged arrowhead, of Green, H.S. (1980: The Flint Arrowheads of the British Isles, BAR (British Series) vol.75) Sutton B type. Made from a primary flake of dark brown, good quality flint, with the sandy coloured, worn chalky cortex (the "rind" flint has to its outer surface) remaining to the dorsal face, the edges have been carefully and invasively (as far as the cortex would allow) pressure flaked to shape. The ventral face has had similar flaking; the edges are pressure flaked but the removals didn’t cross over the centre line, leaving the original sur…

The surface has a smooth golden-brown patina which is well developed. Measurements are; length 56.1mm, width 24.2mm, thickness 2.9mm and weight 9.73g. An incomplete copper-alloy arrowhead or spearhead of the Bronze Age date (2500-1200 BC). The tip and socket of the object are missing and the retained portion consists of the central body. There is a central ventral and dorsal rib. An insufficient portion of the arrowhead/spear remains to prove diagnostic, therefore a specific type cannot be attributed. The metal is a dark brown in colour with a pitted patina. Length: 32.45mm, Width: 19.89mm, Thickness: 8.81mm, Weight: 7.2g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy barbed and tanged arrowhead, dating to the Bronze Age, between 1350 - 1050 BC. The arrowhead is triangular in form. In antiquity the object would have had two barbs and a central tang. Only one barb is now complete. The remaining barb is broader at the body and tapers to a rounded damaged point. The upper end of the object is pointed. There is a central shallow rib running longitudinally from the point to the broken tang. This is seen in both faces of the arrowhead. The object has a green coloured surface patina.  The…

Barbed and tanged arrowhead. Dimensions: 36 x 31 mm ( as per original record, now updated below). An example of Green. H, S, (1980) Conygar Hill type, made in a pale translucent brown flint. The arrowhead is undamaged, apart from a small, recent chip near the point. The point shows no sign of impact fracture. It is possible it was made specifically for incorporation with other grave goods in a burial, but equally may be a hunting or warfare loss.  Arrowheads of this type were in use during the "Beaker Period" of the Late (final) Neolithic…
