a piece of grey lava quernstone, of probable Roman date. It is curved, with tool marks forming a rim (57mm wide) on the upper edge, and the estimated diameter is 420 mm, with approximately 30% of the stone extant. It is 60mm thick at the outside edge which is also tooled, tapering to 10mm at the opposite edge (being the centre of the complete quern).The quern is broken off on one side, at the point where it was socketed. The underside is slightly dished, showing signs of wear.It weighs 3440g.
