An copper alloy object – possibly a weight, or coin- of probable Roman date. The weight is sub-oval in plan, rectangular in cross section with a very worn design on one surface which includes two parallel lines. The opposite side is too worn to discern a design. The weight is a dark green colour and quite thick. The weight is 21.3mm long, 19.8mm wide, 3.8mm thick and weighs 8.82 grams. The weight was found near a number of Roman coins so may be dated to this period but is too thick relatvie to its diameter to be identified as a coin.

Lead possible steelyard weight. Cast globular weight with a central moulded hole of probably rectangular form, patinated. This object might be taken for a biconvex whorl were the central aperture not rectilinear in its form; it is also too heavy. It is considered this may be a small steelyard weight whence a separate iron hook has been withdrawn in antiquity, before its rusting could leave any staining. There is a suspicion of open cross-hatching on the body of the object, perhaps masked by chewing, as by a small child or vermin. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 29.3mm…

Lead and iron possible steelyard weight fragment. A thick flat-sided fragment of cast lead with two moulded straight edges meeting at a corner, with the object broken to reveal an embedded iron hook of thickness 7mm with a U-shaped end continuing into the lead. At its edge, two layers of lead appear, so the hook may have been sandwiched between superimposed layers or within a folded lead sheet. The lead is patinated and the iron rusted. This configuration recalls the construction of Roman steelyard weights, and this may be part of one, albeit of aberrant and probably homemade form. It …

Lead possible steelyard weight, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast elongated plano-convex weight with a central moulded tapered aperture of maximum diameter 8mm, possibly where a separate iron loop has been withdrawn. The edge of the hole is lined with white fixative and the same material appears on the dented base of the object. Shrinkage lines round the hole may suggest the object was cast in an open mould. Patinated. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 30.2mm, Height: 27mm, Weight: 117.83gms

A lead alloy biconical Roman steelyard weight of 377.86g (12.15 oz or a little over 1 Roman libra). The weight has an incomplete iron suspension loop on the top. There are a series of short radial scratches around one half of the lower hemisphere; the regularity suggests they may be intentional but it is unclear as to whether they represent lettering, numerals or abstract decoration.

An incomplete copper-alloy possible steelyard weight of Roman date, c.AD 43 – 410. The object is in the form of a forward-facing female head with an elongated ovate perforation to the reverse. It terminates at the collar in a worn and distorted curve to the front. The hair is shown as a raised ridge framing the face in a pleat-like design which continues to the neckline and collar. Roman lead steelyard weight. It very approximately bi-conical: it is bulbous around the middle rather than having a defined arris, and it is far from perfectly circular. There is a shallow oval indentation at one end and a double-oval one (a bit like a figure-of-eight) at the other, but no remnant of a loop survives. It has suffered some deep scars, probably due to contact with the plough. 1st to early 5th century. Length (pole to pole): 32.5mm. Diameter: 29.7 – 32.1mm. Weight: 140g.

Diameter: 23.86mm, Weight: 64.7g The surface has numerous shallow grooves and some pitting. The metal is grey in colour with a predominantly smooth patina. Lead or lead alloy 1 pound steelyard weight with axial remains of an iron suspension insert. The weight is bi-conical with a flattened equator. At the apex of the upper cone, there is the remains of an iron insert, probably a loop or hook for suspension. The iron insert does not protrude through to the opposite side of the weight. The surface of the weight is heavily corroded to a whitish-grey colour, and is very scratched and pockmarked through interaction with the soil. The bi-conical form and iron suspension loop are typically Roman, as is the predomina…

An incomplete lead-alloy steelyard weight of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The weight is bi-conical with an iron suspension loop projecting from the apex of each end. The surface of the weight is worn and pitted. The lead has a light grey/white patina and is worn. The weight is 43.4mm long, 33.4mm in diameter and weighs 146g. Steelyards are portable ‘scales with beam arms of unequal length’ (Crummy 1983, 99), rather than being an equal-arm balance.  The material being weighed was suspended via a loop at the terminal end, often in a pan, or from a double hook attached …

Lead steelyard weight. A small cast bi-conical weight with a blind hole in one end and a rectangular socket [5mm x 3mm x depth 6mm] in the other, patinated. The form would suggest use with a small version of a steelyard beam; the lack of rust or corrosion staining at the socket from a suspension loop would suggest the latter had been removed before the object was deposited. Incomplete bi-conical lead steelyard weight of Roman date. It is oval in cross-section, 27.4 x 24.5mm at the centre, with one near-complete conical half tapering to a point at which an iron rod emerges and is turned over, probably originally to form a D-shaped loop which is now crushed. Some of this half is missing, with an irregular gouge out of one side. Most of the other half is missing, with a square depression or gouge at the break revealing the corroded iron rod, which originally would have run from one end to the other and be used for suspension. There are hints of a s…
