A lead weight, possibly a spindle whorl, of Roman or later date. It is conical in form with a flat circular base and central circular perforation. The weight measures 12.07mm in height, 14.38mm in base diameter, and 10.93g in weight. This simple lead weight may date to any point from the Roman period onwards, but if utilised as a spindle whorl might be Medieval or Post-Medieval in date.

Lead weight, possibly Roman in date. It is conical in shape with a rounded top and slightly irregular. The flat edge is the upper face and this has a central depression- possibly where an attachment loop once was. The surface is irregular all over due either to corrosion or poor casting of the weight. It was too heavy for my scales which go up to 200g. It has a length/height of 43.36mm and a diameter of 41.70mm.

Conical lead weight with slender iron loop at top. The base is oval, 15 x 14 mm, and the weight is 34 mm tall in total. It weighs 28.08g (0.99 oz). Because it weighs almost exactly one ounce, it may be a trading weight of the 14th century onwards; but because it has a hanging loop, it may be a steelyard weight. It is not of the conventional Roman form, so may date to any time from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). It therefore seems likely that this heavy example was used for spinning wool. The dating of unstratified Spindle whorls is very difficult. However, E…

Ten lead cast weights found together. Seven of the weights are conical in shape and have a central perforation through the centre. The eighth weight is biconical in shape with a flat horizontal band around the centre. A fragment of iron remains on the top edge of the weight, suggesting there was an iron susspension loop on the weight. The last two weights are roughly annular with uneven edges and surfaces. These weights are difficult to date outside of excavated contexts. For this reason they are given the broard dating of Roman to Medieval.

A conical lead weight from a stratified Roman site. The weight has a hole from the top going through to the base that varies in width and is off-centre. Originally this object was identified as a plumb-bob but the perforation is not central and the object would have swing unevenly, so it is suggested that this is not a plumb-bob but a weight possibly used in the weighing of goods.

A Roman lead steelyard weight with an attached iron loop. At 499.4g, it is tempting to classify this as a relatively modern half-kilo weight; however, this form of weight is generally considered to be Roman in date and the level of corrosion is also consistent with this theory. It is therefore probably designed to be a one and a half librae (491.18g) weight. The artefact is bi-conical, the lower portion being slightly longer than the upper portion and extending to a rounded base. The upper portion has convex sides and a flat top. The iron loop has a circular aperture and there is a …

An incomplete cast lead steelyard weight of probable Roman date (AD 43 – AD 410). The weight is biconical in form and has the remains of an iron wire suspension loop at the top. The surface is pitted and has some modern scuffs and dents. Grey/buff patina overall. Length: 29.9mm; diameter: 33.0mm; weight: 135.88g.

Sedimentary, sandstone, loom weight of unknown date, probably post Roman 800 – 1500 AD. The loom weight is broadly sub rectangular in both plan and profile. It is formed from a relatively hard sandstone. A small broadly rectangular hole has been punched in the upper edge, and it is suggested that this hole allowed the weight to be suspended. Similar weights are associated with loom, although it is possible that this represents a broken (and possibly reused) sandstone roof tile. None of the surfaces have been overly worked and none are smooth or polished. The weight measures 93.6mm…

A copper-alloy steelyard weight of possible Roman date. No exact parallel could be found for this artefact and the suggested date is based on a consideration of the form and patination. The weight is roughly 'acorn-shaped', with a bulbous lower portion and truncated conical upper portion with an apex loop. At the base of the conical portion is a moulded ring. At the centre of the flat bottom side is a circular hole containing what appears to be lead. The artefact measures 25.7mm high, 13.9mm wide and weighs 19.39g.

A cast lead weight, possibly a spindle whorl, of Roman or later date. It is plano-convex in form with flattened top and bottom and a central circular perforation. The surfaces are undecorated but there is a small area of damage on the upper surface probably resultant from plough or similar action whilst in the ground. The object measures 21.49mm in diameter, 9.28mm in height, and weighs 21.54g.

Cylindrical lead weight, damaged at one end. The complete end has a iron stub at the centre, probably the remains of a suspension loop made by putting a lengh of wire with a looped top into the lead as it was cast. It is 28.5mm in diameter, 40.5mm long and weighs c.60 grams. Such simple lead weights were often made at home for weighing quantities casually rather than for trade and are difficult to date. Bi-conical lead weights with iron loops were made in the Roman period for use with steelyards, the different shape and rougher casting of this example suggests it may be unrelated to t…

A cast lead cylindrical weight of possible Roman to Post Medieval date. The cylindrical body of the weight is cast in one piece and had flat discs at either end. From one of these protrudes and iron suspension loop. It is not possible to date weights such of these any closer outside of excavated contexts. The weight is 29.1mm long and 23.1mm in diameter. It weighs 88.1 grams.

An incomplete lead weight, probably a steelyard weight of possible Roman date. In its current state the object is oval shaped in plan and conical in profile with flattened top and bottom faces and a central circular perforation. Extending from the top of the perforation, and visible at the bottom of the perforation, are two corroded lengths of iron that probably originally formed a suspension loop that is new incomplete due to old breaks. The base of the object has quite a sharp finish that may indicate it is only one half of a larger biconical weight, the remainder now missing due to …

Large lead weight with integral iron loop at the top. Roughtly circular in shape, it has raised area around the flat top where the iron loop is sunk, suggesting it was made in two phases. The iron was sunk into the block and lead moulded around it to give it shape and extra weight. Roughly 55mm in diameter and 30mm deep. This style of weight is typical of Roman steelyard weights, although some weights with iron loops have been found in the early Medieval period.

It measures 23.08mm in length, 11.84mm in width, 9.31mm in thickness, and weighs 10.86g. A sub-conical shaped lead weight that is poorly cast with uneven and splaying edges and an offcentred sub-oval shaped perforation. Presumably this was intended as a spindle whorl or similar. A circular lead weight of Roman or later date. It is plano-convex in shape with a central perforation 3.6mm in diameter. It is 18.15mm in diameter, 3.25mm in thickness and weighs 17.84g. The domed surface is roughly decorated with incised lines radiating from the centre. Shorter incised lines, incised at 45 degrees to the outside edge, run up to meet them. The spindle whorl could date from the Roman through to the medieval period.
