An incomplete lead steelyard weight probably of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The object is bi-conical in shape, with two equally sized upper and lower hemispheres and a pronounced circumferential ridge at the centre. At the apex are the remains of an iron suspension loop. The surface of the weight has a number of pits and scratches and the patina is mottled white to mid-grey. As noted by Leahy and Lewis (2018: 274), such weights are often associated with Roman scales however caution is needed as their dating and function are open to interpretation. Comparable examples recorded on …

A Roman copper-alloy anthropomorphic steelyard weight, dating to AD 75 - 200. The weight consists of the head of Minerva, helmeted and terminating at the neck. At the apex of the helmet is raised crest, this is formed of a singular rectangular projection which tapers to the base of the back of the neck and projects slightly outwards. This is divided in the centre by a slight indentation, though this gradually recedes until halfway through the crest. 0.4 mm away from the top of the crest is a small pierced hole, which would have been used for suspension. The remainder of the helmet is …

The surface of the lead is marked by several thick but superficial linear scars randomly distributed and at a variety of angles. 1st to 4th century AD. A lead probable steelyard weight of probable Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. The weight is ovoid or egg-shaped and has a circular perforation through it from top to bottom which would have housed a separate suspension loop. The mass of 161.9g is roughly equivalent to half a Roman libra, though there is no need for a steelyard weight to conform to a specific weight. It could also be of later date. The weight is 36.4mm long, 27.6mm in diameter and weighs 161.9g.  The central perforation is 5.4mm in diameter. Compare SWYOR-364F05.

Lead steelyard weight with iron suspension loop, probably of Roman date The cast weight is of flattened biconical form and is near-complete, missing part of one end loop (with a surviving length of 42.5mm) and currently weighs 86.7g. Lead weight. Cast plano-convex oval weight, with moulded detail on its convex side depicting a human mask with vertically ribbed hair, deep oval eye sockets; a perfunctory slot suggesting the base of the nose and the mouth; above a rounded beard or chin rendered by a few vertically incised strokes. The mass may suggest this to have represented one half of a Roman uncia [of 27.3gms], and that it was used to measure small quantities of commodities of either high monetary or – perhaps - culinary value. The appearance is of a Celtic head, the distinctively ribbed hairstyle appearing mos…

Elongated lead steelyard weight, probably of Roman date. The weight is an elongated, bulging trapazoid in section with an integrated loop at the top. The weight is thinnest at the loop end and wider toward the bottom before coming to a rounded point. It weighs 84.5g which is 2.15g overweight for three Roman ounces. This is within a tolerance for the weight and fits the Roman system. Additionally, Franken (1994) shows elongated weights as part of some steelyard types. Length: 64.9mm, Height: 20.6mm, Width: 15.1mm, Weight 84.5g

Copper-alloy, lead filled, steelyard weight in the form of a female head. The head has a hairstyle parted in the centre with a knot at the neck, possible ear wreath. The suspension loop is pierced through the hairline rather than being separate. There is no bust as the weight cuts off at the neck. It is not broken. The top of the head is worn. The face is also quite worn. Head slightly tilted to her right. Dark green-patina all over. Continental examples (Franken 1994: A108 -120) have a bust draped in a toga and a more distinctive hairstyle. It is likely that this weight is insul…
