A complete Roman lead and iron steelyard weight dating to circa AD 43-410. The steelyard is broadly D-shaped with a flat base and rounded body. Emerging from the top of the body is a square section shaft. Sitting in the top of the shaft is a an iron suspension loop. The presence of the suspension loop has resulted in significant iron staining around the shaft.
Becase it was suspended, the steelyard weight can be classified as Tyrrell's type B, though its shape is unorthodox and does not match any of the 6 sub-classes from the Heybridge assemblage (Tyrrell 2015).

An incomplete Lead and iron steelyard weight of probably Roman date (AD 43-410). The object has a flattened-base, which is slightly concave, the form is globular and retains a short portion of the integral iron top loop as well as rust staining from an inserted iron loop. The loop is represented by iron corrosion and a small spur at the apex of the object.
The flat base would have permitted use as a standing weight, and, for this, the mass may suggest a value of one libra or Roman pound.
The metal is grey in colour with a predominantly smooth patina.

A lead and iron steelyard weight of probable Roman date. The weight is very worn and it is difficult to tell the original form. At the top is the remains of an iron shank and while this is visible at the bottom it does no penetrate the bottom apex of the weight. The top of the weight is bulbous and tapers inwards to a smaller, worn bulbous shape.
If Roman it is possible it is an acorn shaped weight which much of the nut of the weight and metal casing lost. However, it is possible that the wear pattern indicates an inverted conical shape, with a Medieval or Post-Medieval date.

A rectangular lead alloy weight of 159.95g (5.64oz, approximately 1/2 a libra or Roman pound) which has a square cross section and tapers towards the top end, which has been pierced for suspension. The object is extremely crude and looks to have been made from a piece of metal which has been folded or possibly hammered. There appears to be a faint incised cross on the top.

A lead possibly steelyard weight of Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. The weight is ovoid or egg-shaped and has a circular perforation (about 7.0mm diameter) through it from top to bottom which would have housed a separate suspension loop. The mass of 81.09g is roughly equivalent to quarter of a Roman libra. Length: 33.45mm, diameter in the largest centre section: 24.50mm. The ends have a diameter of about 15.0mm. There is damage at one end where the possible hook was situated. The weight has a thick cream/white patina suggesting considerable age.

Roman (1st to 4th century) lead and iron steelyard weight: The cast weight is an asymmetrical bi-conical in profile with a truncated upper and lower face and is sub-circular in section. The truncated faces of the weight have an incomplete iron loop. The surface of the weight is undulating, and slightly pitted, and has a mid grey coloured patina.
It weighs 127.96g and is 41.38mm long, 34.4mm wide and 32.05mm thick.
Barford, Blockley and Day (1984) illustrate a similar shaped weight dating to the Roman period, as does Allason-Jones and Miket (1984; Nos. 8.46 and 8.47).

Biconical lead steelyard weight, of probable Roman date, with an embedded U-shaped, circular cross-sectioned copper-alloy loop at the top. Another copper-alloy loop, also circular in cross-section, is linked to the first one. This is teardrop shaped, with one terminal coiled three times into a now vacant tube and the other terminating close to the tube’s lower-side opening. The coiled terminal seems likely to be broken and missing further coils if it was to suspend the weight securely. If this is the case, the break is worn.
The upper and lower ‘halves’ of the weight are of…

A Roman cast, lead steel yard weight. dating to AD 43-410.
The weight is bi-conical and would have had a (now missing) iron loop protruding from the top. The sight of the missing loop is evidenced by an area of embedded iron and corrosion product. There are multiple striations and scuff marks on the surface. The weight is a light cream colour with an area of orange-brown iron corrosion at the top.
The weight is 45.3 mm high, 49.6mm in diameter and weighs 475 grams.
This weight would have been attached to the hooks of a steelyard balance where the load hooks were attached.…

A plano-convex disc of lead, 76.4mm in diameter and 615g in weight (approximately 2 Roman libra), most likely used as a trade weight. The disc has angled sides with circumferential ridges which suggest it was cast in the base of a ceramic jar or other vessel. The thickness is uneven, varying from 15 to 20mm.
