An copper alloy object – possibly a weight, or coin- of probable Roman date. The weight is sub-oval in plan, rectangular in cross section with a very worn design on one surface which includes two parallel lines. The opposite side is too worn to discern a design. The weight is a dark green colour and quite thick. The weight is 21.3mm long, 19.8mm wide, 3.8mm thick and weighs 8.82 grams. The weight was found near a number of Roman coins so may be dated to this period but is too thick relatvie to its diameter to be identified as a coin.

An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy steelyard weight with a lead core in the form of a bust probably of the god Jupiter. The lower portion of the weight is lost to old damage such that only a fragment of the bust’s shoulders remain. The surviving copper-alloy shell consists of an entire human head that is very well moulded providing a naturalistic representation of a male head. The head has oval depressions for eyes which appear to have slightly domed eyeballs within, suggesting no enamel was intended to fill these. Between these is a projecting triangular nose. Lead weight, probably a Roman steelyard weight. The body of the weight is lead, and it is roughly globular, with an iron rod protruding at either end (top and bottom). Viewed from one end (either top or bottom) it is sub-rectangular, measuring c. 43 x 37mm; viewed from the side, it is oval or sub-circular. In general it is very battered-looking, with dents and scratches and one deep cut. The iron rod at one end looks square in cross-section, of side 6.5mm; at the other end it is too corroded to tell the shape. The overall length from one end of the iron to the other is 55mm, and the l…

Copper alloy possible weight fragment. Cast fragment of a plano-convex discoid object, with a straight cut or broken edge, probably representing about one third of an object with an original diameter estimated as c.30mm. Fiercely abraded.
