Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman bi-conical steelyard weight, made of lead with a remnant of an iron loop at the top. It is nearly perfectly circular and symmetrical. The apices and the equatorial edge are rounded rather than sharp. The loop is almost entirely missing, broken off at the level of the surrounded lead, and the break is old. No iron emerges from the base. Mid- 1st to early 5th century. Height: 43.3mm. Diameter: 44.4mm. Weight: 364.5g

Lead weight, discoidal with slightly splayed sides, diameter 26.3 - 27.5mm, thickness 8.5mm. The weight, 51.01g, does not conform with either the Avoirdupois (1.799oz) or the Troy system (1.639oz). It is possibly Roman and for 2 unciae (c.54g). Mid 1st - 4th century.

Roman lead steelyard weight. It is biconical: sub-circular in cross-section, with rounded apices that are well-centred. Two embedded iron rods of circular cross-section are visible at the top: the remnant of a loop which has broken away, not recently, at the level of the surrounding lead. The surface of the lead is marked by a few accidental shallow gouges and linear scars. 1st to early 5th century. Diameter: 39.0 x 35.9mm. Height: 44.0mm. Weight: 295g

Roman biconical lead steelyard weight. It has an embedded U-shaped, rectangular-cross-sectioned iron loop at one end and the stub of another iron element, perhaps another loop, at the opposite end. The break is not recent. The surface of the lead is marked extensively with short shallow linear scars. 1st to early 5th century. Height: 48.3mm. Diameter: 37.0mm. Weight: 185.6g

Roman lead steelyard weight. It very approximately bi-conical: it is bulbous around the middle rather than having a defined arris, and it is far from perfectly circular. There is a shallow oval indentation at one end and a double-oval one (a bit like a figure-of-eight) at the other, but no remnant of a loop survives. It has suffered some deep scars, probably due to contact with the plough. 1st to early 5th century. Length (pole to pole): 32.5mm. Diameter: 29.7 – 32.1mm. Weight: 140g.

Lead or lead alloy 1 pound steelyard weight with axial remains of an iron suspension insert. The weight is bi-conical with a flattened equator. At the apex of the upper cone, there is the remains of an iron insert, probably a loop or hook for suspension. The iron insert does not protrude through to the opposite side of the weight. The surface of the weight is heavily corroded to a whitish-grey colour, and is very scratched and pockmarked through interaction with the soil. The bi-conical form and iron suspension loop are typically Roman, as is the predomina…

Incomplete bi-conical lead steelyard weight of Roman date. It is oval in cross-section, 27.4 x 24.5mm at the centre, with one near-complete conical half tapering to a point at which an iron rod emerges and is turned over, probably originally to form a D-shaped loop which is now crushed. Some of this half is missing, with an irregular gouge out of one side. Most of the other half is missing, with a square depression or gouge at the break revealing the corroded iron rod, which originally would have run from one end to the other and be used for suspension. There are hints of a s…

Ovoid lead weight with remains of iron attachment rod passing axially from top to bottom. The weight is light grey in colour with surface dents and scrapes but no decoration. Weights such as this are usually identified as steelyard weights which were in common use during the Roman, Medieval and Post Medieval periods. There is no archaeological context or stylistic markers for this weight, but the degree of patination is suggestive of some age, therefore a wide range date is suggested curtailed in the 17th century. A similar weight can be seen at KENT-D4981D on the PAS database. Circa …

Conical lead weight of uncertain date. The weight has a circular base with tapering conical sides and is pinched at the top with a transverse circular suspension hole. There are four circular holes spaced equally around the edge of the underside of the weight, that penetrate upwards through to the sides of the conical body. The surface of the weight is pock-marked through minor impacts but there is a possible raised mark to one side in an area of damage that could be a 'V'. The holes are unlikely to be for calibration purposes but serve some other function, There is another similar w…

Biconical lead steelyard weight, of probable Roman date, with an embedded U-shaped, circular cross-sectioned copper-alloy loop at the top. Another copper-alloy loop, also circular in cross-section, is linked to the first one. This is teardrop shaped, with one terminal coiled three times into a now vacant tube and the other terminating close to the tube’s lower-side opening. The coiled terminal seems likely to be broken and missing further coils if it was to suspend the weight securely. If this is the case, the break is worn. The upper and lower ‘halves’ of the weight are of…

Roman lead steelyard weight; regular fully-round oval shape (circular in horizontal cross-section and oval in vertical cross-sections) and taller than it is wide (at a ratio of about 1:1 1/3). It is slightly flattened on the base and protruding from centre of the top is the stub of an iron loop. The surface of the lead is marked by several thick but superficial linear scars randomly distributed and at a variety of angles. 1st to 4th century AD. Height (including loop stub): 57.1mm (excluding loop stub): 53.3mm. Diameter at centre. 39.0mm. Weight: 483g

Large biconical lead steelyard weight with stubs of iron loop at either end, of probable Roman date. It is crudely made, measuring 40 x 43mm at the widest point where the two halves meet, and 32mm long at most. Neither half is quite conical; the cross-section is oval at the central point, and the highest point is not central on one half. There are two iron stubs at either end, both oval in cross-section. It weighs 198.6g.

Lead weight, probably a Roman steelyard weight. The body of the weight is lead, and it is roughly globular, with an iron rod protruding at either end (top and bottom). Viewed from one end (either top or bottom) it is sub-rectangular, measuring c. 43 x 37mm; viewed from the side, it is oval or sub-circular. In general it is very battered-looking, with dents and scratches and one deep cut. The iron rod at one end looks square in cross-section, of side 6.5mm; at the other end it is too corroded to tell the shape. The overall length from one end of the iron to the other is 55mm, and the l…

Possibly Roman lead steelyard weight, egg-shaped with an embedded iron suspension loop. There are several V-sectioned grooves on the surface, two forming an irregular X. Height 41.2mm (without loop 37mm). Diameter 29.5mm. Weight 189.08g. Perhaps for 7 Roman ounces (unciae) which = c.189g. However, as there is no need for a steelyard weight to relate to any weight system this correlation may be coincidental.
