Lead alloy and iron toy fragment. Cast lead alloy oval-section grip or handle from a toy pistol with a simple scroll running down the lower side of the handle, worn traces of relief, and the trace of a moulded scroll at its upper end. A ferrous metal pin of length 9.4mm passes through the grip close to its wider end, and the object is broken across the site of another hole of diameter 2mm at its upper end. Extensive traces of rust in the hollow back of the handle might suggest loss of further ferrous components, including another rivet and perhaps a leaf spring. The lead alloy is pati…

An complete cast lead toy in the form of an elephant from the post-medieval to modern period (AD1800-1900). The elephant is in a standing position and has sustained some damage to the legs. The two legs on the left have been slightly shortened and both front legs have been bent inwards almost together. The trunk is pointing backwards towards the mouth. There is a casting seam on the underside of the body. There are no fine detail on the features of the elephant. This object would have been a toy for a child and was possibly part of a larger set. Elephants were very popular in th…

The metal has a mid-yellow/grey patina and is worn. The object is 36.6mm long, 13.8mm wide, 7.5mm thick and weighs 12.2g. Parallels are illustrated in Forsyth & Egan (2005), p.90-96. Post medieval copper alloy miniature cannon. In form it is similar to ship and field guns of the eighteenth century and later. The trunnions suggest the gun was intended to be mounted in a gun carriage, so possibly a copy of a naval gun or field piece. Many of these cannons were fired and are often found with exploded barrels from mis-fires. In this case the damage to the muzzle is more likely to be due to the ravages of time. Forsyth and Egan (2005:79-84) discuss toy cannons and think the ones that actually fired were widespread by the end of the sixteenth century. Most surviving exa…

Probably part of a damaged Post Medieval lead or lead alloy toy whirligig or buzz disc. The toy consists of a flat disc of sheet lead alloy, or lead, with a serrated edge though this is now largely lost. The completed whirligig would have had two adjacent sub oval string holes near the centre. There is possible sighting indentation but the perforation has not been made, though this seems rather close to the edge and may represent an attempt at a repair. A similar whirligig has been recorded in Forsythe and Egan (2005), page 390, No 13.8. Dates to between c1600 and c1900 AD. The l…

Post Medieval to Modern copper alloy toy watch body. It is circular in plan and domed in section. The back of the watch body is decorated with a series of concentric rings, five in all, around a central depression. The concave face has a raised concentric ridge 1.5mm wide 2.5mm from the edge. There is raised beaded circle 4mm from the centre tha may be part of a ratchet mechanism or more likely, an imitation of one. An example of one of these is shown in Fig 71 (Forsyth and Egan, 2005, page 345). The watch falls broadly into Forsyth and Egan's Type 12 (Forsyth and Egan, 2005, pages 38…

Lead toy or spinner. Flat disc with a knife-cut serrated edge and two central drilled holes of diameter 3.3mm. Casually incised lines appear scratched on both sides, along with possibly stamped impressions. Lightly crumpled. A string would be passed through the holes, and when its ends were sharply tautened, this object would rotate and emit a buzzing sound. Lightly patinated, retaining a grey tint. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900 Diameter: 42.4mm, Thickness: 2.6mm, Weight: 35.04gms

An incomplete cast copper alloy toy cannon from the late 17th -18th century. The object is hollow cast and is broken between the two basal lugs and the muzzle. Toy cannons could be fired after loading the muzzle with a small quantity of black powder. Once loaded the cannon must have been fitted with some sort of slow fuse. The toy was intended for imaginative play rather than active use. The Toy cannon is Type 3, Design 1 (Forsyth, H. and Egan, G. (2005), Toys, Trifles and Trinkets.
