The object is made of pipeclay and resembles part of an outstretched arm, with open fist.  A groove runs around the end furthest from the hand, perhaps to facilitate attachment to a cloth, leather or wooden body.  Just above the groove, at the base of the arm (viewed with the hand facing up) is an embossed number '6'.  A continuous mould line runs round the entirety of the object, including vertically down opposite sides of the arm. The arm is white in colour. The arm is…

An incomplete ceramic figurine in the form of a child's doll of probable post medieval date, 1800 - 1900. The figurine is broken and the lower legs are missing. These small ceramic dolls were sold as childrens' toys, and were extremely popular in the mid to late 19th century, in both Britain and North America. Most were manufactured in Germany. The dolls were nicknamed 'Frozen Charlottes', the name relating to an American folk ballad 'Fair Charlotte', in turn based upon the poem 'A Corpse Going to a Ball' by Seba Smith. The poem tells of a young girl called Charlotte, who refused t…

Ceramic toy. A hard fired glazed china clay model of a jug, modelled at a scale of c.1:20, probably as an item of dolls' house furniture. The vessel form represented is a squat globular jug with a pouring lip and an applied looped handle [now mostly lost] springing from the upper body. The interior is a narrow cylindrical void so the object was moulded rather than made like its full sized equivalent on a wheel. Toys for girls seem less common than toys for boys in the range of material seen by this reporter. This might alternatively have been an individually sold novelty or 'fairing'.…

Smooth red hard-fired ceramic doll. It is a human figurine, complete save for the head and lower legs, representing an individual of uncertain gender - neither primary nor secondary sexual characteristics are modelled - though the breadth of hips might hint that a female is intended. The arms are alongside the body, with the hands resting on either side of the pelvis. The surface may be lightly slipped. The size, posture and neutral gender are all features of small dolls more usually modelled in white pipeclay, known as Frozen Charlottes. An example in white pipeclay, and various…

Length: 50.7mm, Width (foot): 15.1mm, Thickness: 13.4mm, Weight: 11.11g. Paul Greenwood kindly comments: 'This appears to be a china doll's leg, I have dug many arms, legs and heads of this type on Victorian refuse tips. The head, arms and legs are ceram…

A miniature ceramic vessel. The vessel is in the form of a narrow-mouthed jug or amphora. The jug has a narrow flat base which expands to the shoulders and then narrows rapidly to the opening. There is wide moulded lip around the opening. There are two wide lugs on the shoulder. The vessel surface has the remains of sooting on it, suggesting that it was used in a fire, probably during its use as a toy. There is a large, slanted 'V' shape on the surface of the vessel however it is not clear whether this is intentional or accidental. Probably modern in date. Similar amphorae-shape…

An incomplete fired clay figurine of probable 18th or 19th century date. It has been suggested that the character portreyed here is possibly Struwwelpeter (Shaggy Peter), who first appeared in an 1845 children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. The figure depicted is that of a young male, who has sholder-length wavy hair, and wears a spotted waistcoat and a cravat. The left arm is angled at ninety degrees from the elbow, held across the body. To the left of the hand are four scratch marks, suggesting that the figure has scratched himself with his fingernails. The damaged chin also bears p…
