Lead-alloy boy-bishop token dating from the late medieval period, i.e. c. AD1300-1600, commemorating the yearly election of a 'boy bishop' who would 'hold office' from Dec 6th to Dec 28th. The token is very similar to size and lay-out of silver groats of the 15th century. The obverse of the token depicts a bishop with mitre with a letter (illegible, possibly a Greek Omega) to the right and left of the bust. The inscription reads [SAN]CTE.NIMOLAE.[ORA.PRO.NOB]. 'Boy Bishop' penny token, c.15.5mm diameter and 1.2mm thick, showing on the reverse a long cross with four quadrants at the centre, each containing three pellets and enclosed by a solid ring. The marginal legend reads AVE/REX/GEN/TIS. The obverse has a marginal inscription, SANCTV...NICHOLA.. surrounding a mitre, but without a ring separating the legend from the central field. In many respects it is most like Rigold 1978 Plate IX.J although the absence of the ring is a notable difference to any which he publishes.
