An Early Medieval (late Saxon) copper alloy stirrup strap mount dating 11th century. This stirrup strap mount is a Williams Type A, Type 4, sub-triangular mount. At the apex of the mount is a fleur-de-lys motif forming a tri-lobed projection; the body of the mount is a pointed oval shape and there are two lobes projecting from either side of the lower point. At the base there are the remains of the flange which extends along the entire length of the base. The front of the mount is decorated with a cast pattern comprising a symmetrical scrolled pattern. The mount is quite worn with a r…

An incomplete copper-alloy stirrup strap mount dating to the eleventh century. The mount is trapezoid in plan with a broken apex. A small tab of metal projects at either lower corner. Both tabs are in the form of an animal head resembling a rabbit. The animal has a worn face but two large oval ears. When the mount is orientated correctly the animal heads are upside down (ie the ears point towards the base of the stirrup). The surface of the mount is decorated with a Scandinavian-type beast-head in niello. The head is seen in profile left when the mount is orientated to 90 degrees cloc…

Copper alloy, ferrous staining, stirrup mount. Cast and slightly curved flat-backed pentagonal plate tapering from a broader oval end to a narrower apex bearing a round hole of diameter 3.9mm. Williams Class A, Type 12.The display surface is decorated with six bosses flanking a central boss, with sunken areas between them. The intention was probably zoomorphic though in its worn condition the present effect is vaguely floral, and might suggest a later Viking Age or Romanesque date. Ferrous staining on the back of the object, at its broader end, show it was attached to iron when lost o…

The outer face is decorated with a high-relief simplistic animal who is missing their head due to the break. The lower edge has two rivet holes. Copper alloy cast openwork mount; though perhaps from a zoomorphic design, this is now unclear; the object tapers from a broader end with two apertures towards a narrower end, and is broken at both its ends. It appears likely a separate element is fused to one end of this object, suggesting both to have been part-melted. Suggested date: Early Medieval to Medieval, 900-1100. A Late Early-Medieval (11th century) copper alloy openwork stirrup strap-mount in the Urnes style. It does not fit with a published Williams type, but would probably be included with his Class A. It has iron staining on the reverse, suggesting the missing rivets were of iron. It measures 49.58x40.15x9.83mm and weighs 33.59g. The stirrup strap-mount is triangular in shape with a circular piercing at the top (with a raised concentric rib around). Along the side of the mount is the moulded body with a limb/wing emerging from it into the body of the mount at an angle. One of the lower rivet holes remains and displays evidence of iron corrosion. A copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of probable 11th century date. The mount is sub-pentagonal inform. Due to adhering soil, the exact nature of the decoration is uncertain; however, the design is certainly broadly in line with other examples in this class, consisting of two interwined beasts (see Williams 1997: 29). The outward-angling sides immediately below the apex loop each represent the neck of a downward-facing animal. At the base of each of these sides is a rounded lobe, which represents an ear.
