An early-medieval copper alloy stirrup-strap mount. The object has Anglo-Scandanavian connections and animal imagery. The stirrup mount has a square outline with two small ridges each on the left, right and upper sides. There is an openwork pattern inside. It is possible that the openwork is one (or two) animals with all fore legs raised. There are four perforations in the piece, two in the top corners and two at the lower bar. Three of these perforations are not filled and the top right perforation has the remains of an iron rivet. Similar design to Williams Class B - LIN-3B…

The outer face of the object has a moulded zoomorphic decoration in the form of a pair of ears above a brow ridge. The lower end may have a snout. Patina reddish brown covering most of its surfaces. A worn copper-alloy Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) stirrup-strap mount dating to the eleventh century AD. The mount is flat and pentagonal in plan, having an apex loop at the top and three projecting lobes on each side, which on this example have not survived. The flat surface would have originally featured a design, which is now extremely worn. There is one circular rivet hole at the apex loop and two circular rivet holes at the base of the object. Similar examples of this object are seen in records BH-736AFD and WMID-1C5C09. This is a typical example of Williams's Class A, T…

A complete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount (c. 1000-c. 1100). Williams 1997: 72, fig. 46. refs: 306-333, particularly 306. This openwork mount has a sub-lozengiform frame with a flat flange at the base. At the top there is a rounded apex loop with iron staining around. From the apex loop the mount flares out at an angle of forty-five degrees reaching a maximum width of 30.7mm. From this wide point it narrows at a forty-five degree angle before stabilising at the base. The main lozengiform field is divided by a diagonal cross creating four lozeng…

Copper alloy stirrup terminal, as kindly confirmed by Rob Webley, who comments on an identification of the object as a mount: 'I would be happy for this to go down as a stirrup terminal...'. Cast zoomorphic mount comprising a broad flat-based snout with eyes or nostrils to either side, and with symmetrical features in low relief perhaps representing other details of a beast's muzzle. The object has a rounded knop above these features, furnished with lentoid eyes in low relief on either side. It is hollow behind where this piece fitted onto another object of a different material, proba…

A late early-medieval stirrup-strap mount, probably dating to the 11th century. The mount is stepped and broadly sub-pentagular in plan, with a slightly downward angled flange expanding from the base of the reverse. The flange has two circular perforations. The main body of the mount is sub-square, with a slightly narrower, squat sub-rectangular tab protruding above this and terminating in a rounded lobe at the apex. The perforation of the apex loop is positioned slightly off-centre at the junction between the sub-square body and sub-rectangular tab. There are a further four openwork …

The mount is broadly sub-triangular, 50.1 mm long and 30.3 mm wide at the maximum, with a rounded apex flanked by two extremely abraded knops. Just below the mid-point the plate of the mount narrows into a waist, 25.0 mm wide, with a small semicircular depression on each side. The mount is generally flat, c. 2.1 mm thick, but thicknening at the centre into a raised boss 3.4 mm thick, although due to its highly abraded surface little decoration is visible. A highly abraded Early Medieval to Medieval copper alloy Stirrup-strap mount, of Williams' (1997) Class A, type 8, dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The surviving mount comprises of a sub-triangular plate, the zoomorphic terminal seen on comparable mounts truncated above the ears. Although now highly abraded, comparison to other examples would suggest that a pair of bifurcating tendrils project from the reverse of the head, terminating in lobes and forming the edge of the plate and with three cast sub-circular openwork elements dividing the tendrils and their lobed terminals. The lower porti…

Probable Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup terminal mount. It is cast in the form of a stylised animal head, with a curved snout, prominent eyes and 'mane' moulded in relief. The mount has a hollow reverse where the stirrup would have been fixed. The mount appears to be broken at one end and the apparent presence of a second pair of eyes at this end of the 'mane' may indicate that a second snout would have been present. The item is 22.6mm high, with a thickness of 9.6 and width of 10.4mm, and weighs 7.88g. David Williams (FRG 24, 1997) dates these to the 11th century.

Copper alloy and iron stirrup mount. Cast trapezoid openwork plate with an in-turned basal edge or flange bearing the rusted stubs of two iron fixing pins passing through drilled holes, with a third at one corner and its counterpart perhaps lost in antiquity, as its lodgement is unstained by rust. This may be a member of Williams Class B Type 1 Group 1. A central element now has a vulpine or fox-like appearance, with a drilled hole through each of two triangular ears above a mask with a rust-stained hole set centrally at its lower edge. A cast copper-alloy top of stirrup strap mount. The mount is rectangular in plan with a domed top. The mount is openwork and depicts an interlaced bearded man, standing, in reserve metal. Two rivet holes are at the top which is bent over with a squared edge. Weight 13.77g, length 37mm and 25mm wide. This is an example of David Williams's Class A, Type 4 mount (Williams 1997: pp. 36-39/Figs. 25 and 26). Dating from around the 11th century, stirrup-strap mounts formed the junction between the stirrup and its leathers (ibid. 2).
