A late Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) copper-alloy anthropomorphic mount, probably from a stirrup terminal and 20.3mm in length. The terminal is triangular in cross section and overall shape. The decoration unusually is not zoomorphic, instead having a moulded ridge around the wide end, from which a subrectangular lobe projects up the centre of the plate and with the narrower portion of the object tapering to a break with incised lines along the margin. The whole can be interpreted as an anthropomorphic mask, with a nose, heavy brows, lines for a beard and faint mouth. T…

An exceptionally well preserved Anglo Scandinavian cast copper alloy zoomorphic stirrup terminal, 44mm in length, cast in the form of a crested beast head which curves around and back (to face up the stirrup) with jaws agape where it connects to and appears to bite its body. This curved head creates a single circular openwork aperture to the terminal. The details of the head, eye and crest are defined with incised lines on one side of the object only, perhaps suggested an orientation during use. The inside edge is complete and encloses the stirrup arm, leaving protruding stumps of…
