An incomplete cast copper alloy stirrup strap mount with zoomorphic design of later Early Medieval (Late Saxon), 11th century date, of sub-trapezoidal shape, the upper and (the usually angled) lower edges now missing including a break through one openwork perforation at the lower edge, the upper edge is also truncated through an perforation. The main decoration is roughly incised (either in the model/mould or finished casting) to form a forward-facing beast mask, two eyes, rabbit-like ears and a triangular snout are quite clear, though the piece has lost much of its original surface as…

Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount of Williams 1997 Class B, Type 4 in quite fresh condition but without any trace of iron fixings on the reverse. Weight 38.86g. Length 48.2mm. Width 30.2mm. Thickness 18mm. 11th century. Examples of this type were dubbed by Williams 'East Anglian type face mounts'. This was an appropriate description in 1997 when 7 of the 12 listed had Norfolk provenances, 2 Suffolk and 3 Oxfordshire. Thanks to the PAS the type's distribution has widened considerably since then and it is far less strongly skewed towards …

Complete late early-medieval copper-alloy stirrup terminal with a flat trefoil finial. The socket is semi-cylindrical in cross section, open at the rear and the top. The front and sides are decorated at the top with a pair of transverse ridges approximately nine millimetres apart. The space in-between is both transversally and longitudinally convex (so somewhat hemispherical). The trefoil plate projects downward, slightly forward and laterally from the bottom-front of the socket. The lateral foils are crescent-like, curving upward, while the central foil is sub-circular. Within the soc…

Copper-alloy 11th-century stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A, Type 14, consisting of a cross-shaped top and a flaring triangular plate. The upper arm of the cross is short and wide, and the two side arms are long and thin, the right-hand arm (as viewed from the front) being distinctly longer and thinner. There is no surviving decoration on any of the arms, but they are very worn, so decoration may have been lost and the arms may have been damaged or modified. Where they cross is a circular rivet hole 4.1mm in diameter.  The sides of the mount then flare out to for…

Late early-medieval Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup-strap mount of Williams’ (1997) Class A, Type 10A. It is pear- or teardrop-shaped, with a flattened (though still slightly convex) base, a loop at the apex and two small knobs projecting laterally from the widest part. Apart from the loop there are no perforations, either decorative or functional. The mount is convex on the front and concave on the reverse. Viewed from the side, the upper part curves moderately rearward of the lower part. On the reverse, at the base, there is a flange of the type Williams (ibid, 25) describ…

Zoomorphic decoration on the rather worn front face, "looping bodies of the pairs of snake-like beasts", is carried out in lines of finely executed interrupted rocker-arm engraving giving the appearance of tiny addorsed triangles. Part of the iron fitting remains within the flange. Weight 26.55g. Length or height 46.4mm. Width 33.2mm. 11th century. Finder's no. RW/F8

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class B,with engraved decoration. The main part of the mount is large and rectangular with straight sides, 35.9mm wide, with an obliquely angled flange. The flange runs the full width of the mount and has a central hole with iron rivet, which retains a rectangular patch of iron corrosion around it on both front and reverse. The upper part of the mount is rounded and shaped into three concave curves or scallops on either side and one at the apex, making seven in all, and giving a roughly pentagonal shape to the mount. There is a circular…

Incomplete late early-medieval copper-alloy stirrup terminal with a flat trefoil finial. The socket is semi-cylindrical in cross section, open at the rear and the top. Parts of the edges in both places are now lost to worn breaks. The front is decorated near the bottom with a transverse ridge, below which are two shallow transverse grooves. The trefoil plate projects downward and laterally just below these. The lateral foils are each decorated with a single shallow crescent-shaped groove. Incomplete and rather worn Late Saxon strirrup-strap mount of Williams 1997, Class A, Type 1 with the apex missing (an old break) though the fixing hole is present. Two iron rivets and the remains of an iron strap lie above a right-angle flange. Very simple and somewhat debased engraved decoration comprises a slightly sagging transverse line linking lines which run up close to the edges to the break, a median line which descends from the break, is interrupted by the fixing hole and stops above the sagging line, and two subdivided triangles, both incorporating a line close to …

Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup terminal of trilobate foot-like form (Williams 1997 Finds Research Group Datasheet 24, fig. 5). The top is marked by a pair of transverse rib. There is insufficient depth within the object for the corner of a stirrup to gain sufficient purchase because the space is largely taken up with an excess of lead solder. Height 27mm. Width 25.8mm. Incomplete Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup strap mount. Williams Class A, Type 10A (closest to fig. 36, no. 184). Sub-triangular or 'pear-shaped' body, broken across the perforated lug at the apex, the debased stylised decoration shows an elaborate interlaced animal with its head at the apex, in high relief. The reverse has a flange at the base, broken across two rivet-holes, much iron corrosion on the concave lower third. Extant height 51mm. Width 33mm. Weighs 33.13g. 11th century.

Incomplete Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of William 1997 Class B Unclassified, with the upper part missing and two fixing holes in an angled flange. The old breaks apppear to have truncated two apertures, probably reniform as in some Class C mounts. On the front face extremely crude asymmetrical engraving defies interpretation, and on the reverse there are surface irregularities that have escaped fettling. Weight 21.6g. Extant height 44.5mm. Width 36.7mm. 11th century. Compare Williams 1997 no. 474, from Meols, which has the same shape and similar engraved decoration.

Lower part of Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams 1997 Class B, Type 2, Group 1 with old breaks. There are vertical engraved grooves on the angled flange flank a group of three fixing holes. A variation in this example is that the hindquarters of flanking animals are not superimposed on the flange. Instead there are groups of oblique grooves on the sides above it. These may represent the feet of beasts. Only one other Class B, Type 2, Group 1 mount has been recorded from Norfolk (ibid. no.413). Weight 12.8g. Extant height and width 25.8 and 35.3mm. 11th century.

Late Saxon copper alloy cruciform stirrup-strap mount of Williams 1997, Class A, Type 14. The two lower fixing holes along with the area of the front face between them are filled with remains of iron rivets, and the reverse above the right-angled flange is covered by the decayed remains of the iron fitting. Both sides and the top of the sub-triangular lower arm of the cross are followed by an engraved groove but within it much of the front face is obscured by rust. The ends of the top and side arms carry engraved grooves but only the top arm is convincingly zoomorphic. A fixing hole a…

Cast copper alloy openwork Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mount of Williams Class A, Type 12. Openwork lozenge shape with a pierced attachment loop at the top and a rear facing straight and flat flange at the base. Four sub-circular holes in the main body create a saltire cross, with moulded raised knops around the frame and in the centre. The pierced attachment loop is blocked with iron corrosion with further iron concretion around a circular rivet hole through the flange Circa AD1000-1150.
