A copper alloy medieval iron spear head, AD.1100-1400. The object comprises most of the blade and socket of an iron assymetrical spearhead. The blade has broken at the tip losing its point, the break is straight and either caused by a sharp bend in the metal or fracturing along a line of slag. The socket is complete and is a closed type, this would suggest an origin in either the Roman or Medieval period. The lack of overlap commonly seen in Roman spear sockets would suggest the latter date as would the assymetrical blade shoulders. The socket has a single piercing approx 10mm from the…

Iron spearhead of probably late Medieval date. The blade is complete and a broad leaf shape with convex curved sides widening evenly form the point to the rounded base of the blade. A rounded rib runs from the socket about half way along the length of the blade on both sides; the ribs thicken towards the base but appear solid. The blade is otherwise flat and even in thickness. Due to the level of corrosion it is hard to identify the width of the sharpened edges, if any. The socket is conical and tapering, continuing the line of the ribs but only hollow until it meets the blade. The en…

A section of animal bone, modified by cutting and filing into a probable fishing spear. The object consists of a tapering, hollow section of animal bone that has been chamfered on three sides to create a sharper point at the narrower end. This pointed terminal has been further modified by cutting and filing to produce a double point with a rectangular notch in the centre. This terminal is now broken and incomplete. In the centre of the object is a circular hole 1mm in diameter, probably to accomodate a securing pin if the object was attached to a wooden shaft. The find spot was by a r…

Incomplete Late Medieval-Post medieval wrought iron spear head. Small rounded lozenge shaped point which tapers sharply to the short socket, there are long parallel projecting strips (Langets) that are broken at varying lengths, the longest still retaining a small nail used to secure the point in place. There is concretion on the point and around the socket, the surface of the object is black in colour and one side of the point has some corrosion pitting. The point itself is quite blunt and in it's present state would not have been particularly effective as a weapon, there is little s…

Iron probable spearhead fragment. Wrought iron spearhead comprising one half of a robust socket tapering in its internal diameter from 17mm to 7.5mm, and the base of its blade, now of sub-rhomboid form with angled shoulders, but with an uncertain, possibly limited, extent lost from its tip. If the robusticity of the socket and the shortness of the blade are deemed representative of the original object, rather than of the accretion of corrosion products, an alternative function as a spoon bit might be entertained. Suggested date: possibly Medieval, 1100-1350. Length: 123.4mm, Width …

Nearly complete but highly corroded spearhead with damage to the base of the socket. Socket is circular, with straight sides converging to the blade. There are no discernible rivet holes or forged seam. The blade is flat-sectioned and has an unusual angular flame shaped profile. The basal section is lozenge shaped. The lack of forged seam suggests that this is Medieval or Post Medieval.

Wrought Iron. Eel Spear. Tine from an eel spear; this implement would comprise a series of blunt tines arranged in a fan pattern; the fisherman would lunge with the spear at eels which would be trapped between the tines without suffering serious injury. The eel was a valued commodity throughout the Medieval period and its migratory habits were known and widely exploited. Eel spears in museum collections - as at the Hull and East RidingMuseum - show exactly the same techniques continued to be used up until recent times. Suggested date: Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. The find…

An incomplete Medieval iron spearhead dating to the 14th-15th centuries. This is a socketed spearhead with a triangular-shaped blade. There is a slight midrib extending down the midline of the blade before the bevelled cutting edges. The socket has been formed by hammering out the walls and curving them around with the edges overlapping. There is a single rivet still in situ to secure the shaft to the spearhead. The iron is in good condition with little corrosion. Dimensions: length: 79.50mm; width: 26.35mm; diameter: 37.24mm; weight: 40.51g. Identification and dating by Ton…

An iron spearhead which is probably medieval in date. The spearhead is 181mm long and the blade is 30.1mm wide with the socket being 23.3mm in diameter. The blade is leaf shaped and is slightly lozenge shaped in section. The tip of the blade is missing. The socket appears to be cast but there is a wavy ridge on the inside which may suggest that it is wrapped around and then very well joined on the outside. There is a small circular rivet hole in the side of the socket where the spearhead would have been fixed to the shaft. There is some damage to the base of the socket. A similar examp…

A Medieval iron socketed spear head (14th – 15th century). The spear head is narrow with a lozenge-shaped section. The socket is broad with one nail hole with nail still present and possibly a second nail hole, but corrosion is obscuring the detail. There is an oval section of the socket and part of the socket edge missing. Some wood is preserved within the socket. Geoff Egan (PAS Finds Advisor) observes that the form of the spear head suggests it is aggressive rather than ceremonial. Dimensions: diameter of socket: 27.30mm; length: 174.40mm; width: 16.71mm; thickness: 10.58m…

Iron spear-point, 54mm long, weighing 7.90g, probably from the Medieval period. The end of the point and one barb are missing and the object is corroded. It has a round socket and triangular head, the edges of which are slightly convex. The barbs were probably pointed and quite short (around 8mm in length). The spearpoint is similar to number 39 on page 86 of Saunders P and Saunders E (1991).

Medieval iron spearhead, probably of 13th or 14th century date The spearhead is near complete, missing only a small part of the socket base and has an overall length of 279mm. The socket is circular, becoming flat at the neck with an external diameter of 22.2mm (19.6mm internal). Slight damage near the base of the socket may have occurred around a single nail hole. The seam of the socket is open near the bottom and gradually converges, and is closed 75mm from the base. The socket has an internal depth of 91.5mm. The sides of the socket are straight and converge towards the blade. The …

A complete cast iron spearhead, of probable Medieval date (length: 120mm; width at blade: 20.4mm; thickness of blade: 8.4mm; diameter of end of shank: 17.3mm; weight: 56.95g). The rounded wings of the blade are uneven to either side, with the rib clearly visible down the centre. The shaft is hollow and in a one piece without a split to the side, like with Anglo Saxon types, indicating that this artefact is probably later. There are possible remains of an iron rivet to the end of the shank, where the spearhead would have been fastened onto a wooden shaft. The artefact is worn and in…
