A complete copper alloy lunate harness mount dating from the Roman period (AD43-200). The object is lunate or crescent shaped with the main body in the form of curving folds, tapering from the centre to join at the terminals where there is a swirl inwards at both ends. At the left there appears to be an open (possibly broken?) loop; this terminal is also a little higher. The reverse is concave. There is an attachment stud at the base of the curve with a large almost flat top. The patina of the metal is of a dark green to grey colouring with some lighter patches.  Dimension…

Fragment of a Roman copper alloy openwork military harness mount with one disc-ended integral round-sectioned rivet on the reverse. The form of the complete object is uncertain but it would probably have been symmetrical. Trumpet derived motifs suggest it would have been close to some examples with zoomorphic and foliar decoration on Nicolay 2007, pl. 75. There are three non-recent breaks. Extant length 18.6mm. Thickness at rivet 7mm. Thickness without rivet 1.6mm. Weight 1.92g. AD c.120 - c.300.

An incomplete copper alloy Roman vulvate or coffee-bean mount. It consists of an oval-shaped plate with erosion damage to its edges, and a central raised oval boss which is decorated with a v-shaped groove running longitudinally down its centre. These grooved raised bosses are typically interpreted as stylised vulvae. In the centre of the reverse there is a concave depression that contours the back of the boss, at either end of which an integral perpendicular incomplete rivet projects. Roman copper alloy military harness mount, heart-shaped with a median arris and rounded convex-fronted lobe at the base. An integral attachment shank rises from the centre of the concave reverse. It is round in cross-section and T-shaped. Nicolay 2007, Type B19, and very similar to pl.80, no. 100.37. An example from Suffolk (SF-D5BB0B) is quite similar though there is a central projection at the top rather than a V-shaped notch. Weight 2.02g. Height 19.9mm. Width 13.8mm. The length of the shank suggests that the thickness of leather through which it passed was c.5mm. c.125 - c.300.
