A circular mount, probably of the Roman period. It is made from copper alloy, and curves into a hemispherical dome, at the rear of which is the remains of a stud by which it was fixed. It is decorated on the face with concentric circles around a central raised circle. Although there is no discernable trace of enamel, it is likely that some of the inscribed circles had millefiori enamel inlaid, as this is a feature of these objects, and there is evidence of some highly corroded material. The finder notes that it is similar to one found at the Roman bath house excavation in Car…

Copper-alloy Roman 'vulvate' or 'coffee bean' mount, dating to the period c. AD 150 - 300. The mount is oval in shape, with a flat rim and convex body. A groove running down the centre of the convex body gives the impression of a coffee bean. There is a circular-sectioned rivet at each end on the underside of the mount. The mount has a blue-grey patina. It is 20.98mm in length, 12.05mm in width and 11.18mm at maximum thickness. The mount weighs 3.96g. Mounts of this form are thought to have decorated horse-harnesses and possibly used genitalia-inspired imagery to invoke apotropaic …

Copper-alloy zoomorphic object of unknown date, probably within the range c. 43 - 1700 AD, and uncertain function, probably a mount. The object is broadly oval in shape and convex, in the shape of what appears to be a lion's head with moulded features and incised details such as eyes and mane. The object flattens slightly at the top, where a spur protrudes from the back, tapering rapidly into a blunt point. The end of the spur is worn and seems to represent a break. This spur does not seem to have been integrally cast with the rest of the object. The edges of the object are worn and a…

Almost complete copper-alloy Roman 'vulvate' or 'coffee bean' mount, dating to the period c. 150 - 300 AD. The mount is oval in shape, with a flat rim and convex body. A flat-bottomed groove runs longitudinally down the convex body, giving the impression of a coffee bean. There is a rivet at each end of the convex section on the underside of the mount. One of the rivets terminates in a large, flat, circular rivet head. The rivet head has broken off from the other rivet, apparently in antiquity as the broken surface is abraded and worn. The edges of the mount are chipped and ragged and…

Copper alloy belt or strap mount, probably dating from the Roman or medieval period, that is AD43-1500. The mount is circular with a domed head with a circular indentation and central knop on the obverse. The indentation may have been filled with enamel, but there are no traces left now. There are two lugs on the back which were probably connected to form a loop - thus, it may have been a strap slide.

Copper alloy zoomorphic decorative mount, possibly from a military fitting or copper vessel of probable Roman date (50-410 AD). The mount takes the form of a three-dimensional perched bird in the form of an imperial eagle with neck outstretched and wings part- folded and head turned to the left side. The end of the wings is marked by a horizontal step, beyond which the feathers of a protruding tail are represented as a short semi-circular extent with feathers incised. Roman or medieval mount, possibly a vessel escutcheon or vessel mount dating from the 1st-15th century. The surviving part of the mount is broken at one end. It was made from cast copper alloy and is slightly bent. The inside/reverse was plain and there are remains of possibly solder suggesting that it was attached to a vessel or box. One side of the mount terminates in a small moulded circle which could have possibly served as the counter-sunk rivet hole for a screw or nail; in that case the small mount will probably date from the post-medieval or early modern period. However, the …

A complete copper-alloy openwork harness pendant dating to the 3rd century AD. The pendant comprises a flat, roughly oval or leaf-shaped plate. It has a smooth obverse but a concave, unfinished reverse with two short lugs which clearly attached the mount to a leather strap, belt or flap. The outer edges of the pendant are bevelled, whilst the inner openwork decoration is rectangular in section. There are two small loop, set at a right angle to the mount, at the bottom, possibly for a similarly looking openwork harness pendant to hang off the mount. The plate is decorated with openwork…

A late Iron Age or Early Roman copper-alloy mount 40 to 200AD. The mount is a circular convex disc with a raised rim and inner circle. The inner circle is filled with a red colourant probably enamel. It has a circular hole in the centre. The mount is similar to one found in Crummy 1983, no.4037, given an early Roman date in the 1st century. Crummy states this may be military in origin, though it is difficult to determine. It is also similar to another, with a central hole, which is suggested to be a jangle from a harness (Crummy 1983, no. 4618). The present item seems more robust th…

A Roman copper alloy mount in the form of a bust of Minerva with a copper-alloy stud projecting from the reverse. Minerva wears a high crested helmet and traces of a cuirass are visible in the decoration of the chest, though the object is incredibly worn. The length is 52mm, the width is 21mm and the weight 22.88g. Feugère notes that the dating for these objects is a work in progress, though it is clear that each type was not necessarily used at the same time ( Feugère 2004, 33). The symbol of Minerva, Goddess of wisdom, is appropriate for such objects and can thus associate t…

Cast copper alloy Roman copper alloy mount (c.40-410 AD). It has two circular depressions near each terminal and a central larger hollow depression. These depressions were probably filled with enamel or may have been the settings for semi-precious stones or glass. There are two broken attachments at each terminal. The underside is plain except for three slightly protruding copper alloy rivets. It is possibly a lid from a Roman lamp or similar. The length is 28mm, the width is 30mm, thickness 17mm and the weight 24.80g.
