Copper alloy sub-circular Post Medieval decorative lid. It is probably a lid from a jug. It is incomplete, the edge/rim having broken off. There is a protrusion from one edge, this is probably the remains of the hinge where it attached to the vessel. Standing 19mm high it is hollow on the reverse. The dome has a central circular raised boss. It is decorated on the front face with raised lines, enamel and gilding. It is split into four sections by raised lines radiating from the central boss. In each section is an identical scroll design pattern. There is a light blue enamel whic…

Lead alloy tobacco jar lid handle dating from the post-medieval period, i.e. c. 1600-1800. The handle is intact and the uppermost section is shaped like a flower. For tobacco to be pleasant to smoke, it has to be kept slightly moist and the special containers in which it was stored were usually made from lead. These containers also had lead lids with small decorative handles which could take the form of an acorn, flower or saracen's head.

A copper alloy lid, probably from a post medieval inkwell or similar vessel. The lid is undecorated. It has a very robust double lug hinge. The lid itself is sub-circular, one side being straight. The hinge lugs are separated from the circular lid by a triangular thickened area. The edge of one of the lugs is in line with the straight side of the lid. This is intentional, not damage, and may have been to allow a second lid to sit next to the first, maybe on a double ink well. The reverse of the lid is flat except for an oval area which is hollow but has a projecting flange round the e…

Five smaller petals sit between each of the petals on the top layer. The edge is decorated with five sets of pairs of spirals. The reverse is plain and concave an the centre. A protrusion juts out. This is the hinge that would have attached it to the body of the container/jug. Diameter 36.2mm, 6.1mm thick (at the pair of spirals) and weighs 22.78g.

Copper alloy Lid. Cast and possibly turned circular concavo-convex lid with (externally) an incised circumferential border, and a projecting flat-topped handle or knop. The latter bears a brown concretion, though it is uncertain whether this relates to this object or to its burial context. The lower edge is billeted or rouletted, perhaps to grip a container (now lost). The concave internal surface bears a moulded face mask, possibly within a wreath-like border. The object may be associated with tobacco smoking, whether as container or perhaps, at its flat end, also as a pipe t…

Copper alloy Weight Box. Cast lid bearing decoration of compass drawn concentric circles; these appear as inner and outer groups of three lines around a central dimple. Two opposed lugs projecting from the edge of the lid represent the site of a hinge (now bent) with an oval aperture of length 3.6mm, and a similar lug with a smaller hole of diameter 2mm, presumably for securing the lid when the box was closed. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Diameter (clear of lugs): 34.4mm, Length: 50.4mm, Thickness: 2.4mm, Weight: 18.42gms.

A cast copper-alloy decorative handle, probably from the lid of a tobacco jar or other storage container and probably dating from the post-medieval to early modern periods. The object is broadly biconical in shape, terminating at the top in a quatrefoil tip. Below, each foil develops into a sub-triangular rib which flares outwards, each with a groove in beween, towards the handle's widest point in the centre of the object. At the bottom hemisphere of the object the ribs project inwards again, before expanding towards a circular lug at the base for attachment. The object is much worn a…

A cast copper alloy lid from some sort of container, it has been suggested that this is the lid from an ink well. The lid appears to be post-medieval in date as it has been heavily filed but is has a milled edge. The overall look of the object suggests it was made by hand. The lid itself is oval and undecorated on top, albeit for the filing. The hinge extends onto the top of the lid, with a triangular extension. The hinge is formed from two large, heavy duty pierced lugs (again heavily filed). The under side of the lid has an oval aperture, forming a concave depression, with a crude r…

Incomplete cast lead lid escutcheon, possibly from an inner lid for a tobacco jar. The escutcheon is circular in plan and flat in profile. It is decorated, on the upper surface, with a moulded beaded outer edge beyond a plain band defined by two engraved lines. On the back of the escutcheon there is the remains of the sprue mark from casting, which is about 10 mm in diameter. Or perhaps it is what remains of the solder used to attach the escutcheon to a lid, as there seems to be another (half missing) of the same diameter on the edge of the object, about 37 mm away. Tobacco jars w…
