a probable Roman iron double spiked loop.It has been bent at right angles into an L-shape, with a loop, filled with corrosion at one terminal and the two arms terminating with spiked ends. The arms are separate from each other but corroded together. The object measures 57.36mm in length, from loop terminal to the right-angle bend, and is 21.12mm wide across the loop. The arms are 6.56mm and 6.84mm in width, and the object weighs 33g. Cylindrical copper alloy handle with an internal iron core; pierced suspension lug at one end with a wire loop still in place; handle decorated with a series of concentric mouldings consisting of 3 rounded knops separated by raised billeted collars, paired at the upper end; below the lowermost of the mouldings the metal narrows to a tapering shank; of square section at the top and sub-circular section below; from the latter protrudes an iron core which has stained the surrounding copper-alloy with corrosion; presumably this represents the remains of a shank or shaft for a tool or implement.
