Complete Medieval (c. 1150-1450) gillded copper alloy stirrup-shaped finger-ring with a clasped-hand or 'fede' decoration on the band. The thin hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and widens out into the sub-triangular shaped bezel, which has an integrally cast circular copper alloy boss in the setting where a gem would typically be. A gilded late Medieval to early post Medieval finger ring that has been broken and later repaired, with a thin gilded copper alloy band soldered to the inside of the bezel. The earlier ring has a rounded bezel with a raised cast decoration consisting of a series of oblique lines radiating from the centre of the bezel to its edges, giving the impression of a sunburst or a star. The shoulders slope gently from the bezel to the point where the ring has broken and are decorated with further oblique lines in two sections. Bezel measures 17.9mm high, original ban…

Copper alloy signet ring. A thin cast D-section band of width 4.2mm and thickness 2mm with an oval matrix brazed to it. The matrix bears a deeply incised field leaving a curvilinear initial letter – possibly G or T – with a possible bifoliate crown above it, all reserved to form an imprint (Bryony Pateman 2008; An illustrated guide to Collecting Seals, Whitehall Press, London, page 127). About two thirds of the band are lost. This letter form also appears amongst either mason’s marks or graffiti noted on columns in Carlisle Cathedral by this reporter, and doubtless wi…

A complete but bent Medieval copper alloy finger ring, probably dating to c. AD 1200 - 1450. The find has a sub circular bezel in which there is an irregular, sub oval, slightly purple coloured setting- possibly a gem, which stands proud of the bezel. There is a faint legend around the outside, which is rather illegible but appears to read, (+) (N/Z)_A_ENO(R/N) or +D(N/Z)_A_ENO(R/N)C. This may be a nonsensical legend and was only discernible when the find was damp, when initially found. The bezel itself sits proud of the hoop, but is integral with it.…

Complete Post Medieval handmade copper alloy finger ring, c.AD 1400-1500.
This ring is made from two copper wires twined around each other, then flattened to form the ring. The simplicity of this design makes it difficult to date, although the rough and uneven form of this ring indicates that it is handmade, which has informed the dating of this item to the late Medieval period.

A small plain cast copper-alloy finger ring.
It is a simple band, with a width of 28mm, and the object has no discernible decoration. There are three small chips, all concentrated to the same area on the outer face of the band, but it is otherwise intact. It was likely cast, as there is no visible joining line. It weighs 1.24g, and has a relatively good state of preservation.
The diameter is quite small (15mm), so it was likely belonging to a child. It has a dark grey-green patina, and it has a good state of preservation. It is slightly sub-circular in shape, which suggests that it m…

Late medieval or post-medieval copper-alloy disc-shaped bezel from a finger ring, bearing a merchant’s mark. On the reverse there is a straight diametrical and differentially patinated band (a much paler green than the rest of the metal), about four millimetres wide, representing the area of attachment to the missing hoop.
The maker’s mark on the front is rendered in counter-relief and is probably cast. It features a central cross with a long lower limb which bifurcates at the base like an inverted Y-shape. The lines of both the cross and the bifurcation are straight,…
