Copper alloy ferrule of possible Late Iron Age to Roman date. Cylindrical in form with five concentric grooves running around the centre forming a series of four concentric ribs.
Similar examples recorded on the database include: HESH-3A6F76 & WMID-286827, both descibed as beads and assigned a Late Iron Age to Roman date on the basis of style, although no published comparator has been found.

Balustered ferrule
Copper alloy balustered ferrule, with perforated cylindrical central shaft, expanding into disc-shaped mouldings at centre and one end. The other end of the shaft is distorted, as if it had been crushed.
Parallels: This is similar to a ferrule from the related 1843 hoard, M.81.
Measurements: Length: 24.9mm; diameter of terminal disc: 21.20mm; diameter of central disc: 919.5mm; diameter of central shaft: 11.38mm; weight: 20g

It is damaged to the underside, where the two halves join, and missing the thinned edge here.
The ferrule or bead is 18.89mm long, 21.79mm wide and 17.29mm high (its internal measurements are 16.76x13.04mm). It is decorated with two concentric incised lines. On the underside, these peter out where the surface is flattened. It is likely this part would have been underneath an overlapping edge, which is now missing.
A similar object has been recorded from Weston Under Penyard, Herefordshire (HESH-3A6F76). This is described as a copper alloy bead of probable late Iron Age or Early Roman date (50BC-200AD), veering more towards the Early Roman date. Although very similar, this object has been cast in one piece. The Wiltshire example is likely to be of a similar date.Daniel Pett18.897Pewsey3WILT-EB7CF62579553ROMANFERRULERestricted Accessfinds-257955121.796WILT-EBDE02Incomplete-100x41218images/khinds/12121990014A1EC1450196B42009-05-28T17:52:21ZCertainx139922009-03-31T23:00:00Z021IRON AGECopper alloy41427IA116http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/IRON AGEPossiblyCivil Parish2022-07-14T07:08:30.263ZWiltshire1Unitary AuthorityMEDIEVAL3Metal detectorVchape2.jpg439252004Centred on parish117072IA0.5Unitary AuthorityPossiblyWILT4392551500Restricted Accessx13992263446471.01Wiltshire106272011-02-24T13:51:20ZReturned to finderSouth WestCopper alloy cone-shaped ferrule extending into a rolled-sheet hook at its end. It is made from sheet copper alloy 0.5mm thick. There is a slight gap where each end meets and on the opposite side near the open circular end is a rive hole 1.5mm in diameter.
The metal is bluey-green in colour, suggestive of an Iron Age or Roman date, but this is uncertain. It may also be medieval.
