Post-medieval copper-alloy coin weight for a rose ryal. Square and bifacially stamped, the obverse bears the shield of the British arms within a circular border, now quite worn and indistinct, but likely to contain lion, lis and rose motifs. The reverse bears a crown over the numeral XXX, for thirty shillings, all contained within a circular border of fine beads or pellets. There is a lozenge-shaped indentation in the top-left of this face, lying outside and on the beaded border. The metal is patinated mid-reddish-brown on all faces and edges with patches of mid-green, especially in th…

A complete copper alloy coin weight dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1500-1700). The object is square in plan and flat in profile with chamfered edges. The weight has five annulets on each face, one in each corner and one in the centre (similar to 'five' on a die). One face present a worn section between to annulets, possibly a stamp. The weight is 7g which could be equivalent to c. 108.5 grains or possibly the weight of a gold coin. However, it is more likely that the five annulets represent five penny-weights if it is a continental coin weigh…

Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy, uniface, circular, probable coin weight. One face is marked in the upper half with a W, with the roman numerals XXXVI or XXVII below. The other face is blank apart from a central pimple. A coin weight for a Noble is shown on p24 of Withers, P & B, Lions Ships and Angels that is marked with an XXXVI value in roman numerals. At 4.37g (67.4gn) the weight of this object would approximate to a half noble. It is not clear what the W indicates. On this basis, it is likely this is an unofficial coin weight. Circa 1351…

Post-medieval copper-alloy coin weight. It is square and uniface. The face bearing the design is slightly larger than the reverse and so the four edges are sightly oblique. The design is rendered in low relief. It depicts a seated monarch wearing a crown and holding a sceptre. Beneath the throne there is a five-pedalled rose or other flower. Flanking the monarch on the viewer’s left is a letter S and on the right a letter O. All of this is contained within a circular beaded border. Very similar to HAMP-DC7743 which is identified as a weight for a half-sovereign of …
