Treasure Case : 2016 T728. I have examined a fused group of coins reported found at Calton Huswaithe, North Yorkshire. The group appears to consist of eight silver pennies and the weight, 12.7g, would appear to support this suggested number. Only one of the coins has a face that is clear, as the coin on the other end of the pile seems to have become pitted and illegible. The visible side shows the reverse of a penny of the mint of London from the coinage struck under Edward I-III, c. 1279-1333. The standard of the silver coinage at this time was over 90% fine metal. Since these …

2012 T138 Ashbourne area, Derbyshire I have examined a group of coins found in the Ashbourne area, Derbyshire, received at the British Museum in two batches: the following report was amended after receipt of the later material. All but one are official English coins of the Long Cross type, issued between 1247 and 1279. The Long Cross coinage was issued in the name of King Henry III (although it continued to be produce for a few years into the reign of Edward I). Modern numismatists have broken the coinage up into a series of classes, which allow coins to be dated more precisely w…

HOARD OF HENRY I TYPE XV COINS This report concerns a find of 178 silver pennies. The coins were found on four separate occasions between April 20th, 2008 and April 15th, 2009. All of the coins were found with metal detectors, spread around a single field and found between 50mm and 300mm in depth. The distribution is consistent with a single hoard, dispersed by ploughing. Coins of Henry I (1100-35) are rare at the best of times, and the facts that all of the coins are of a single type and that there is no other recorded evidence of Norman activity on the site all points towa…

Treasure case : 2006 T598 a small parcel of ‘sterling’ type pennies, struck after 1279. The coins had been exposed to considerable heat (the melting point of pure silver is 961.93 degrees Celsius) and were partially melted and fused together. Surface detail was clearly visible on only three coins, one of which was struck in London. The parcel was found to weigh 52.8g, suggesting that it contained approximately 37 silver pennies. Medieval sterling pennies were struck in silver comprising 92.5% pure silver co-mixed with 7.5% alloy. The coins are fused together, are clearly as…

Treasure case : 2005 T534 The hoard contains five complete pennies, two cut halfpennies, and one fragment of just over half a penny, which has been snapped along the line of a bend across the middle of the coin. Three of the intact pennies and both of the cut halves have also been bent, and bending of this type is typical of hoards of this period. All of the coins are of the first type of Stephen (1135-53), the so-called 'Watford' type, which is normally dated c. 1136 - c. 1145. The coins are quite heavily worn, which is typical for the type, and this, together with the bending, makes…

13 silver coins, all are official silver issued of the English royal mints and thus will be of good silver, mostly of the traditional sterling standard of c. 92.5% fine metal (the Second Coinage of Edward III was struck to a slightly lower standard, but still of good silver). A details list of the coins accompanies this report. The find contains coins struck through the first half of the 14th century, from the end of Edward I's reign and that of Edward II, and with coins of Edward III up to c. 1351/2.
