I have examined two coins found in August 2004, and delivered to the British Museum on 15 March 2005. The coins consist of two silver pennies of Alexander III, king of Scotland, from his second coinage, issued between 1280 and about 1286. The Scottish coinage at this time followed the standards of the English coinage, so the coins will have a silver content equivalent to the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. Although the two coins survive in fragmentary from, this presumably occurred during their time in the ground, since they do not seem particularly worn by long circulation. B…

All the coins are silver and are from the Long Cross coinage of King Henry III, issued 1247-1279, with one related coin of Henry's similar Irish coinage, which also circulated in England.
