Report on a hoard of possible Treasure from Clowne, Derbyshire, 2014 T545
This report concerns a hoard of ten coins found in the parish of Clowne in Derbyshire on August 3rd, 2014. All of the coins were originally minted as silver pennies, but two have been deliberately cut in half for use as halfpennies. The coins were discovered through the metal-detecting of cultivated land in the course of an organised trip by the CTTS metal detecting group.
The coins were found all found within an area of around 10m², by multiple individuals within the group, and at the finders' reques…

2012 T138 Ashbourne area, Derbyshire
I have examined a group of coins found in the Ashbourne area, Derbyshire, received at the British Museum in two batches: the following report was amended after receipt of the later material. All but one are official English coins of the Long Cross type, issued between 1247 and 1279. The Long Cross coinage was issued in the name of King Henry III (although it continued to be produce for a few years into the reign of Edward I). Modern numismatists have broken the coinage up into a series of classes, which allow coins to be dated more precisely w…

I have examined 17 coins reported found at Duffield, Derbyshire. All are whole or damaged silver pennies, the damage almost certainly having occurred while in the ground. There are 15 pennies of the English Long Cross coinage and 2 of the equivalent Scottish Long Cross and Stars coinage, which also circulated in England. The silver content of both of these issues was over 90% fine metal.
The details of the coins are as follows (coins marked with an asterisk are bent and fragmentary).
ENGLAND
Henry III (1216-72)
Long Cross (1247-79)
Class 3 (1248-50)

I have examined a group of 10 coins found at Ticknall, Derbyshire. Nine of them are official silver pennies of the kings of England and will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. The remaining one is a sterling imitation produced by a continental ruler, John the Blind, king of Bohemia and count of Luxemburg, a type that was imported to England in large numbers, and were known as lusshbournes; they are often found here. His coins of this type are usually of between 80 and 90 % fine metal. The coins are all pennies, or else penny equivalents, and date f…
