A copper-alloy blunt-hooked wire clasp of probable Post Medieval date. The artefact has been made from a single length of wire, bent double to form a simple hook. At the top are two opposing loops, by which the piece would have been sewn to clothing. From here, the hook extends vertically downwards, before sharply angling upwards, forming a 'U-shaped' object. The object is heavily corroded. It measures 38mm long, 26.1mm wide and 3.8mm thick. The weight is 14.2g. This simple form of clothing fastening, which would have been paired with an eye-clasp, appears to have been used throughout…

A post-medieval clothing fastener cast in copper alloy (c. 1750 - c. 1810 AD). The fastener is made up of a central circular element (Dia.: 19.95mm), at one end of which is a rectangular attachment loop and at the other end of which is a perpendicular circular attachment loop (internal dia.: 4.8mm). The rectangular loop is steeply bevelled on its upper surface and has been very slightly bent in profile. The main element of the fastener is concave in the centre of the lower surface. On the upper surface a lion's head is moulded in relief. The eyes, nose, mouth and mane are all moulded, …

The object has a long plate which tapers downwards from its rounded upper side, where there is a projecting lug containing a corroded iron rivet head. The upper surface of the plate bears a relief-moulded pattern. At the narrower end is a possible fleur-de-lis; above this is an 'A-shaped' ridge with decorative projections. the recessed fields contain traces of dark blue and yellow enamels. Incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy two part toggle strap clasp of Read (2008:208-9, no.758) type 4. The trefoil plate with raised vine tendril decoration is complete but the rectangular suspension loop to fold the toggle is lost to old breaks. The plate has two circular rivet holes one in the central lobe of the trefoil end and one near the broken loop; there are traces of iron corrosion around both holes. At the loop end of the plate is a raised horizontal bar decorated with twisted rope design which formed one end of the loop. The back is flat and the front slightly cenvex. I…

An incomplete copper-alloy S-shaped belt fastener of 16th to 17th century date (see Geake, 2001, p. 37). The fastener would originally have been symmetrical in form, comprising the heads and necks of two serpent-like creatures. The bases of the two necks are separated from each other by a transverse band of two low ridges with a central gap in between. The neck of the intact creature bears traces of scales or feathers. On the head is a beak-like nose and, on each side of the head, a vessica-shaped eye. The central band holds what appears to be a sheath of corn, set at a right-angle.…

Post Medieval (1550-1650AD) cast copper alloy incomplete dress fitting. There is a rectangular attachment loop before the main body of the fitting, which is damaged and incomplete. The main body is openwork, and was probably circular. Due to the incomplete nature of the fitting, it is impossible to determine whether this is the hook or eye. The surviving fragment is 12.22mm long, 14.26mm wide, 1.44mm thick and weighs 0.9 grams.

A copper-alloy fragment, probably from an S-shaped belt-fastener of late 16th to 17th century date (Geake, 2001, p. 36). For a parallel on the PAS database, see BH-EEBCE4. The piece comprises one of the fastener's zoomorphic terminals. The terminal is of typical form, having the appearance of a creature resembling a snake or swan. The animals has a beak-like nose, cast feather-like indentations on the back of the head and further feathers or scales on the the curved neck. The neck is oval in section and the object has a light green patina. The piece measures 17.6mm long, 12mm wid…

Cu-alloy hollow light-weight dress- or cloak-fastener in the shape of a lion's head dating from the early modern period, i.e. 1800-1900. The lion's head is hollow on the back and displays three small loops which were probably used to attach it to the cloak. Another moulded loop or similar is missing from one side of the lion's head and it can no longer be determined was it looked like. Many such fasteners have been recorded on this database. Many of these have come from coastal areas: Dorset (SOMDOR-FAE740), Hampshire (HAMP1024, HAMP2958, HAMP2579), Cornwall (CORN-7A96E7, CORN-CED143,…

An incomplete copper-alloy snake-form belt fastener of suggested late 16th to 17th century date (see Bailey, 1997, p. 20). Just over half remains of what would originally have been an S-shaped fastener. The object is of flattened oval section and tapers in width towards the end. On one side the decoration takes the form of scale-like mouldings, while on the other side the body is segmented. The corroded object measures 32.4mm long, 20.1mm wide and 4.5mm thick. The weight is 7.71g.

Medieval or post medieval tin alloy pin, probably from a catch, brooch or buckle. It is broken into two pieces and there is wear on one side of the tip. The pin is in two pieces. It is formed of a rectangular strip bent at one end, 12.8mm long by 5.1mm wide and 1.7mm thick. The second piece has part of the strip which expands into a triangular tip 15.5mm long, 11.1mm wide and 3.2mm thick. Both pieces together weigh 2.3 grams. The fragment is hard to date but the material suggests a late medieval or post medieval date

An incomplete 'Hasp and clasp' fastener of probable 17th century date (see Bailey, 2004, p. 100). It is unclear whether this piece represents the hook element or the looped mount. The plate has parallel sides at the bottom and these converge towards the top. At each of the five corners is the remnant of a pierced lobe. The horizontal bottom edge is also damaged and is missing its hook or frame. Decorating the upper surface is a foliate pattern within a beaded border. The object measures 28.5mm long, 17.9mm wide and 1.6mm thick. The weight is 3.72g.

A copper-alloy belt mount of probable 17th or 18th century AD date. It has been suggested that these mounts may have been worn with naval uniform. For similar examples, see PAS record nos. BH-F68964 and BH-7D0728. The object has been cast in one piece and the top section bent backwards to form a loop, thus enabling it to be clipped to a belt. The front part of the mount is roughly tongue-shaped, tapering from top to bottom before widening slightly at the rounded bottom end. A transverse ridge marks the top of this front part. The folded tab is of thin section, with flat surfaces, a…
