A copper-alloy fragment, probably from an S-shaped belt-fastener of late 16th to 17th century date (Geake, 2001, p. 36). For a parallel on the PAS database, see BH-EEBCE4. The piece comprises one of the fastener's zoomorphic terminals. The terminal is of typical form, having the appearance of a creature resembling a snake or swan. The animals has a beak-like nose, cast feather-like indentations on the back of the head and further feathers or scales on the the curved neck. The neck is oval in section and the object has a light green patina. The piece measures 17.6mm long, 12mm wid…

A copper-alloy S-shaped belt fastener of probable late 16th to 17th century AD date (H. Geake; 2001; pp. 36). The cast object takes the form of the heads and necks of two serpents or birds. The moulded surface decoration is executed on all sides of the fitting but is heavily corroded and difficult to decipher. On each head the eyes and open mouth are visible and there is crest on top. The necks are of sub-circular section and increase in diameter towards the centre of the object, where there is a moulded band. The surface appears to have been tinned. The fastener measures 30.1mm …

An incomplete copper-alloy belt mount of probable 17th or 18th century AD date. It has been suggested that these mounts may have been worn with naval uniform. For a similar example see PAS record no. BH-F68964. The piece is roughly tongue-shaped, tapering from top to bottom, with a rounded terminal. At the upper end is a flat protrusion - this is part or all of the tab which would have been bent backwards in order to secure the mount to the belt. The mount itself has moulded decoration on its upper surface. At the top, where the object is at its widest, there appears to be the head …

An incomplete copper-alloy belt mount of probable 17th or 18th century AD date. The object has been cast as one piece and the upper end bent back on itself to form a loop which could have been attached to a belt. The upper side takes the form of an elongated tongue-shaped moulding. At the top is a raised transverse ridge and below this is a cherub-like winged head. The narrow bottom end is occupied by a smaller human head. The folded rear portion (now bent out of alignment) has a much wider irregular plate and is bordered at the top by a transverse groove. The artefact measures 4…

A copper-alloy s-shaped belt fastener of probable 17th to 19th century AD date. The object is slightly bent but has little wear or corrosion. It is three-dimensional, each hooked end taking the form of the neck and head of a bird, probably a swan. A central band which passes around the object separates the two animals. Each half of this band has a groove with a central raised pellet and two raised lozenges; this is bordered on each side by a raised ridge. Moulded leaves protrude from either side of the central band. The upper two thirds of the swan's necks are covered with moulded f…
