Near complete stamped two-part Post-Medieval leaden cloth seal. The reverse possibly carries a crude pine cone design but this is not clear. The front face carries a large 'A' design with an annulet above, below, to the right and presumably also to the left, although the seal 'hinge' has broken at this point. A very similiar design recorded in 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items at the British Museum' by Geoff Egan,(Item No.309, p.106; Fig. 309, 9.192) has been attributed to Augsburg in Germany. They are thought to be from mixed linen warp and cotton weft fabric which this city wa…

A nearly complete, stamped lead alloy bale seal. The seal carries a mixture of Cyrillic (Russian) and Latin lettering. These seals are not uncommon finds and research is ongoing into the deciphering of their legends. This particular one is rather worn and difficult to read. It is thought that they were used for flax or linen crop (seeds etc.) or finished linen etc. Basically they give the quality grades and port of export of the goods, along with the names of officials involved in export customs. The seal most probably dates to the mid 18th century and is 28mm long, 22mm wide, 2.6…

Lead cloth seal. The object comprises one plain lead disc with a fragmentary disc atop it; these are attached at the centre, though part of the top disc is loose. The top disc has a central motif what appears to be a sword with a snake entwined around it. There is a low-relief pellet border around the diameter.

A damaged and incomplete post-medieval cast lead cloth seal probably of 17th-century date. A two-part seal joined by a now missing loop, disc 1 bears a raised design, possibly a bird, surmounting letters, possibly 'IM'. The design and lettering are difficult to discern due to the rivet and losses accounting for nearly a third of the disc. Disc 2 simply bears an incuse letter 'B'. Such a personal clothiers'/weavers'/searchers' seal is very difficult to date precisely, although the incuse letter would seem to date it around the 17th century AD. Both discs have been bent, scratched and abraded.

A damaged post-medieval cast lead cloth seal. A two-part seal joined by a squashed loop, disc 1 bears a raised privy mark 'S/?'. Disc 2 been scratched '2.5 / 25?'. Such a personal clothiers'/weavers'/searchers' seal is very difficult to date precisely; an example illustrated in Egan (1995, 85, 183; ref. 241) bearing similar scratched numerals was dated between the late sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

An incomplete and damaged post-medieval cast lead cloth seal probably of 17th- to 18th-century date. This was probably a two-part seal joined by a loop; the loop survives straigtened, with the second disc missing. The extant disc 1 bears a raised letter 'G' on its rivet, possibly followed by another character. There are also raised lines, possibly from the weave of the cloth. Such a personal clothiers'/weavers'/searchers' seal is very difficult to date precisely. Both the disc and the loop have been bent and corroded.

A worn and abraded post-medieval cast lead cloth seal. This is a two-part seal joined by a loop. There is a raised design on disc 1, but this is obscured by the rivet and also by wear and losses. It is possibly an 'A' as many cloth seals were made in Augsburg, although this is not certain. Disc 2 bears no obvious decoration through the damage it has suffered. Such a personal clothiers'/weavers'/searchers' seal is very difficult to date precisely. Both the disc and the loop have been bent and corroded.

A corroded, bent and incomplete lead cloth seal of probable 16th to 18th century AD date. One of the original two sub-circular discs survives. The upper surface bears a relief design depicting a mythical beast (possibly a unicorn) standing left. This design sits within a solid ring border. At the bottom left hand corner are some unidentifiable scratched symbols. The seal measures 25.6mm in diameter, 2.9mm thick and weighs 7.2g.

Post Medieval lead cloth seal with off-centre legend. Diameter 19mm. NO / WI / CH // B... / IR...GT... The reading of disc 2 is very uncertain. The letters are the initials of the surnames of the twelve wardens of the Norwich Weavers' Company for a year between 1650 and 1705 (Egan 1994, 46).
