Incomplete post medieval lead two-part cloth seal, unidentified continental import. D.18.1x14.4mm//missing; casting seam and textile impression on reverse; weighs 2.75g. Draped figure facing within pellet border, holding sword. A ?feather extends from the neck to each side of the head// (on rivet) part of (?heraldic convention for fur) Geoff Egan comments: It may possibly be St Pol in France (cf. Egan 1994, British Museum Occasional Paper 93, Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum, no.304) where the heraldic convention for fur may perhaps be what is represen…

A complete post-medieval lead cloth seal of 17th-century date. This two-disc seal is of a type associated with imports from Haarlem in the Netherlands of a fine linen known in England as 'holland' (Egan 1994, 110; ref. 321). Disc 1 bears a moulded shield with the city arms: sword erect, four mullets to sides, cross potent in chief. Only part of the common inscription, 'HAERLEMS GOET' ('goods from Haarlem'), is on a disc seemingly too small for the stamp (at Dia. 18.6mm). Of the same diameter is disc 2 (formed by rivet head). It bears the numeral '20' in relief within a beaded circle; c…

An incomplete post-medieval cast lead cloth seal of early 18th-century date. A disc partially survives from what was probably a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. The disc bears a female bust facing left, that of Queen Anne (1702-14 AD). The bust is seemingly surrounded by a border of short raised transverse lines and no legend. There is evidence for a loop at one point below the bust. The cloth seal has been bent and has corro…

A lead-alloy post-medieval cloth seal from the Low Countries (16th to 17th century AD). This upper disc is sub-circular and on its upper surface features a design stamped in low relief. It depicts a haloed St Peter standing facing right holding a large key in each hand. Within a beaded border is the partial inscription: 'ST?... PEETER'. The disc was not large enough to take all of the stamp and as a result most of the border is not included. The inner face has a zigzag imprint of fabric - a striped twill. The stub of a loop survives just off centre. The representation of St Peter and …

A worn and incomplete cast lead cloth (alnage) seal of post-medieval date. Only one of the possible pair (or more) of discs survives. In low relief it is inscribed with the following lettering: '4 (inverted)? II//I M'. The other surface is plain. The angular sides of the seal suggest that it may have been cut deliberately.

A slightly bent and corroded lead-alloy broadly oval object: possibly a part of a medieval cloth seal. Within an abraded border is a crozier in low relief on the upper surface. The other surface is flat, plain and without obvious means of attachment. The crozier is associated with the production of cloth at Malines (modern-day Belgium) (Cf. Egan 1994, 194; refs. 325-326).

A slightly bent, incomplete cast lead-alloy Somerset cloth (alnage) seal of post-medieval date (17th century AD). Only one of the pair of discs survives in its entirety. Parts of the other disc survive at the stud. The main disc is stamped with the date '1611' curving round within a beaded inner circle, the letter 'D' flanked by pellets below. In the outer circle is the inscription '[...S]OMERSET', with the beginning obscured by wear. The stub on the other face appears to bear a fraction of the royal arms; part of the stub has been curled round on itself. The circumference of the main…

A slightly corroded cast lead-alloy cloth (alnage) seal of post-medieval date (c. 17th century AD). Only one of the pair of discs survives in its entirety. Parts of the other disc survive at the stud, and off centre. At the centre of the main disc are the numerals 'XX' in low relief, with an annulet where they join. This is set within a linear border. The stub on the other face appears to bear a fraction of a shield, proabably that of St George, flanked to the left by the number 4, probably part of a date in the 1640s or 1740s (see 'Notes', below). On the lower surface of the main dis…

A broken and incomplete post-medieval lead cloth seal of 16th-century date. This two-disc seal bears St Michael spearing the devil (in the form of a dragon) on Disc 1, and a shield on Disc 2. The shield is quartered with a lion rampant in the upper left quarter, and an unclear design top right. The date '1545' is above the shield, and an uncertain letter or character to each side. A cloth seal with a slightly different depiction of St. Michael is recorded on this database, ref.: SOMDOR-6D1E97. Just over half of the original cloth seal appears to survive, following old damage.

A complete post-medieval cast lead cloth seal probably of 17th-century date. A two-part seal joined by a loop, disc 1 (Dia.: c. 18.4mm) bears a mark which is difficult to discern due to the rivetting process, possibly a privy mark. Around it is a possible legend in which any lettering is difficult to discern; perhaps the numerals '16' can be seen. Disc 2 bears a deep incuse pair of letters - 'V' and 'C' - perpendicular to which has been scratched '20' (one side) and '4' (on the other) in Arabic numerals. Such a personal clothiers'/weavers'/searchers' seal is very difficult to date precisely.

One piece of a post medieval lead two-piece seal, possibly with an anthropomorphic design. The object is sub-circular, with a section missing from the circumference, and the connecting lead strip and opposite piece of the seal has been lost. The uniface design on the seal appears to depict the body of a man and a woman (both naked and missing their heads) on two third of the face, with an underworld? below them; on the right is a ladder from the ground level downwards. It is of uncertain origin, and the complexity of the design is unusual for cloth seals. Cloth seals were in use betwe…

A worn and incomplete cast lead cloth (alnage) seal of late medieval or early post-medieval date. 'Disc 1' is presumably consituted by the central element on the seal's rivet. It bears an device which is difficult to discern: an ornate shield depicting the arms of England surmounted by a crown and flanked to the left by a small ?rose (Geoff Egan pers. comm. 01/11/2006). Disc 2 bears a 'medieval' crown with central fleur-de-lys rendered such that the hoop can be seen from 'below'; there is a further fleur-de-lys central near the back of the hoop. Medieval to early Post Medieval complete two piece cast lead cloth seal. Comprised of two discs, one with a central perforation, the other with a raised spoke for attachment. The raised spoke has a hatched design, of 4 vertical lines and 4 horizontal lines. The remainder of the lower disc is plain and udecorated. The upper disc is worn, apparently having two legends in concentric circles, separated by a narrow, raised circle. The remains of the inner circle appears to have the letters AO. The outer circle reads ---ANOBT---. The arm holding the two discs together is very worn. The open …

One lead disc of an incomplete German cloth seal. The disc depicts the Wesel design of two crowned 'B's, with a floral design below. There appears to be a legend around the edge of the seal, however this is worn and illegible. A similar example in Egan p193 figure 42, 316 had the legend +FINN.BOMAINBN.DER.WESEL. The reverse of the disc is blank. The disc has been bent and reshaped. It has a diameter of 36.07mm and is 2.47mm thick. There is a break at the apex, where the arm of the seal would have been bent. It is probably from a two disc cloth seal dating from the late 16th to early 17…

The lower disc has a diameter of 18.45mm, while the upper disc is slightly larger measuring 20.32mm in diameter. The total thickness of the two discs is 4.07mm.
