This is probably part of a four part cloth seal with two discs connected by a short rectangular tab. One of the discs has the remains of an illegible inscription or pattern. There are either radiating lines forming a border around the edge of the disc or it is an inscription. The central pattern is illegible. An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy cloth seal, probably dating to the late Medieval - Post Medieval, between AD 1400 - 1650 (length: 29mm; diameter: 20mm; thickness: 4.5mm; weight: 7.2g). The cloth seal is sub-circular in plan and flat in section, with a damaged and flattened suspension loop at the top. It consists of two discs, one perforated to receive an integral rivet on the reverse of the other; the flattened remains of the rivet survive. The artefact appears to be decorated on one side only (the riveted face), where a probable horse, dog or camel is depicted facing right i…

A slightly corroded and squashed cast lead-alloy probable cloth (alnage) seal of post-medieval date (c. 17th century AD). The object is sub-oval in form, with one flattened side where it has been squashed. It appears to consist of a main disc which has a rim on the reverse as with a cap. At the centre of the reverse, within the rim, are the sub-oval ?remains of a ?second element. At the centre of both faces is a stamped device. On the upper surface is an elaborate shield shaped cartouche in low relief within a circular line border. Stamped within the cartouche is a capital letter …

A possible fragment a pro forma cast lead cloth seal. The seal is a sub-rectangle in plan with one terminal being abraded and therefore incomplete. In profile the pro forma is tubular and has then been flattened, which is probably intentional. The reverse plate is more incomplete than the upper plate. The upper plate has lettering in high-relief reading 'XXXIIII' within a rectangular beaded border. The reverse is has a possible high-relief design which is very feint and may include a 'J'. The surface of the pro forma has a matte off-white coloured patina. It measures 26.39mm long, 17.…

Near complete stamped two-part Post-Medieval leaden cloth seal. The reverse possibly carries a crude pine cone design but this is not clear. The front face carries a large 'A' design with an annulet above, below, to the right and presumably also to the left, although the seal 'hinge' has broken at this point. A very similiar design recorded in 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items at the British Museum' by Geoff Egan,(Item No.309, p.106; Fig. 309, 9.192) has been attributed to Augsburg in Germany. They are thought to be from mixed linen warp and cotton weft fabric which this city wa…
