Draped figure facing within pellet border, holding sword. Post medieval two-part lead cloth seal depicting a crown over a portcullis on disc two, with no legend. It is poorly struck. It is 13mm in diameter and weighs 1.94g. -//crown over portcullis Geoff Egan comments: It is late 16th century and apparently an alnage issue. The rather cartoon version of the heraldic motifs, however, suggests it may be a contemporary counterfeit, set illictly on a textile to avoid the cloth tax and/or the quality inspection. Much more interesting to have dark dealings than the system ticking away routinely. Salisbury Museum Medieval Catalogue 3 (2…

Disc 1 is stamped 'searched' - examined for quality. Cf. Egan 1994 p.78 and p.181 no.204 & p.86 and p.184 no.244.

An incomplete Early Post-Medieval (1600-50) lead 2-part cloth seal, comprising disc two only, which has been pierced. It measures 12.87x12.77x1.27mm and weighs 1.3g. The disc bears a crowned thistle with a 1.53mm diameter piercing to its left. The projection for the connecting strip is below and bent back onto the reverse, which is plain. Geoff Egan comments: Compare with my BM catalogue no. 200, though this may well be from a four-disc version - an integrally cast inner disc from an early C17th alnage seal. There could be several reasons for the rough piercing: someone might…

It is routine for these to be difficult to the point of impossibility to identify with individuals. The isolated incuse A (with scratched 21¼ for length in yards) is a hint of a late date - ie post 1700.

Egan 1994 Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum; pp.86, 184; no.244) which have the proforma 'length, narrow, weight'. These would have been used on particularly heavy cloths.

Post Medieval lead cloth seal, c. 16th century AD. The seal measures 16mm in diameter and weighs 2.0g. The seal is very worn and is a small fragment. On the front of the fragment there is the bottom of a 'V' on the left hand side which is then followed by a raised circular line which would have continued underneath any other inscription, encircling the central emblem. The emblem here seems to form a shield shape, similar to those found on the Colchester Dutch community broad seals found in Egan, 1994, Lead Cloth Seals - occasional paper, no's 27, 28 and 31, pg 164-5.
