Lead possible cloth seal fragment. A thin disc of lead, stamped or hammered and bearing a neat uniface design of a plain voided cross within a plain border, the latter partly lost. Patinated. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a token, but the fabric is too thin to admit this, or indeed any sustained or recurrent use. This object was presumably detached from a two-part or multiple seal attached to unspecified goods. The plain design does not appear in the recent (2017) corpus of cloth seals published by Stuart Elton. It does not figure in Egan's (1994) presentation of clo…

Both discs are very abraded and bent such that it is not possible to confidently date the design on their surface although they they may have faint traces of writing. An incomplete lead Cloth Seal of Post-Medieval date (AD 1671). The object is composed of with two sub-circular discs with a rectangular tab attaching the two discs. The tab is incomplete due to old abraded breaks around the outer flan of the disks. This tab would have allowed the sealing cord to pass through the seal and attach it to the bale of cloth. Both faces of the seal are heavily abraded however some of the design is legible. On face is illegible. The other face retains its motif which reads: SA[I?]//1671//●[rose] ● The metal is a dark cream in colour. Length: 17.6…

A lead artefact, probably one part of a two part lead cloth seal dating from the post-Medieval period, about AD 1500 - 1800. It is flat and discoid, and there are faint traces of an impressed design on both sides, most of which are very worn and unclear. Those elements that can be seen consist largely of short, straight lines. The seal has a light grey patina. It is 17.2mm, in diameter and 1.6mm thick. It weighs 2.16g. It is possible that this is a lead token of some type, but the diameter and thickness suggest that the identification as a seal is more likely.
