An incomplete Post Medieval lead alloy two-part cloth seal dating to the 16th or early 17th century, from Augsburg, Germany. Only Disc 1 (with rivet) survives; Disc 2 (with ring to fit round rivet) and the connecting strip are missing. The surviving disc has two faces with stamps, one wide and flat and covered with a well-preserved stamp. The other (the rivet face) has part of a stamp only, on the central bump (the squashed rivet). The flat face depicts a pine cone, with a stem decorated with a wide collar with oblique lines (perhaps imitating a twisted cable) before flaring out to…

Large, lead, post medieval 16th-19th century, circular cloth seal dated AD.1571. The seal has an off centre pelleted ring that contains the legend, DVYT/ COLCESTER/ BAYE/ 1571. The lower half of the date has been lost due to the off centre stamping. The reverse of the seal has two squashed lead rivets attached but is otherwise undecorated. The object has a white/grey patina of lead oxide. Seals made by the Dutch textile industry in Colchester all carried the date AD.1571, as this was when the industry was founded in the city, rather than recording the year of sealing (Egan 1992). W…

Discovered whilst metal detecting Preservation- Good Lead disc bearing picture and inscription on one side and inscription on the other. Protrusion which would have formerly been a central stem used to fasten the disc to another forming the seal. This would then have been operated by pressing both discs together. On one side there is a relief design enclosed in an oval of a man with a sheep either side of his legs, and another slung across his shoulders, with the word REGISTERED running along the outside of the left edge of the picture. A worn and damaged cast lead possible cloth seal of late medieval or early post-medieval date (c. 1485-c. 1700 AD). On the upper surface the object is broadly circular with some squared-off cuts. Initials are moulded in low relief at its centre: 'HR', where the 'H' is ligated with the 'R'; above is what appears to be a crown. On the other side it is too worn to discern what the decoration is, if any; this side has been cut into a sub-square shape. The object now remains light grey in colour due to the corrosion process. It has been bent in profile. It is possible that the HR refers…

A Post-Medieval lead alloy cloth seal. Originally a two-disc seal with a connecting strip, the strip and second disc have been lost leaving a scar which has torn away part of the raised rim of the surviving disc. On the reverse of the disc is the stump of a rivet in the centre, although this is worn and there is now no trace of a stamp. A thin raised line runs across the middle of the reverse of the disc, either side of the rivet; this was formed when the cloth seal was originally made in the mould. On the front of the remaining disc is a castle (with a domed tower either side of …

A complete and worn cast lead cloth seal with a joining strip. Disc 1: King facing, on ship and wielding a sword; rose on side of hull. Disc 2: plain with rivet head. 24.9 x 17.6 x 3.2mm. Weight: 6.69g. Geoff Egan has commented that it is apparently a new medieval type. It seems to have the basic sword-wielding king in ship-of-state as on the late medieval gold coinage, and the rose on the side of the hull may point specifically to Edward IV's ryal (aka 'rose noble') of 1464/5-70. Although it is extremely worn, an inscription can be made out surrounding the main device, but i…
