Post Medieval lead alloy or lead cloth seal mid 16th to 18th century AD. The seal is possibly English and appears to have a stylised letter S within a wreathe border on the obverse and the reverse is illegible. No exact parallel has been found. Lead seals such as cloth seals and bale seals were widely used in Europe between the 13th and 19th centuries as a means of identification and as a component of regulation and quality control. Cloth seals appear to be the most thoroughly documented type of seal. Cloth seals were typically two disc seals joined by a connecting strip. These were i…

An incomplete lead alloy four-disc cloth seal, probably of Post Medieval date (1500 - 1700). The discs would have been circular (their edges of now partially broken) and connected by short, rectangular tabs. Only two discs from this seal remain, the other two have broken off and are missing. The two remaining discs have been folded together along their joining tab so that only the exterior surface of each is visible. Neither disc is perforated, meaning the missing discs probably were. The faces of the discs both display a relief square topped Royal shield. There are no inscriptions, w…

A Post Medieval, lead alloy cloth seal dating from AD 1660 -1669, probably 1665. It consists of a circular disc with a rectangular tab extending from one side. On one side the disc carries a two line impression in relief reading CAR / SAY / 166(5). The other side is plain except for a small raised pellet in the centre. The seal measures 19.02mm in length, 3.86mm in thickness and 12.18mm in diameter. It weighs 2.11gm. A similar cloth seal is recorded as LANCUM-E352C2. T…

A Post Medieval, lead alloy cloth seal, probably dating from AD 1500-1700. It consists of two circular discs, one of which is perforated to take an integral rivet. A lead alloy cloth seal probably dating from the reign of James I, 1603 - 1625. It is one disc of a probable four disc seal, with broken tabs which would have linked the discs at each end, and a damaged rivet on the reverse. The rivet would have been passed through a hole in one of the other discs before being stamped to press it together and seal it. The only design visible is on the front of the surviving disc. It has a crowned thistle flanked at the top by the letter I (R) (standing for James Rex?) and a legend which reads COLCH[ESTE]R. Compare to NMS-631284 which cites Egan (1994)…
