An incomplete Medieval or Post Medieval lead cloth seal, probably dating to c. AD 1400-1714. Disc 1 of a 2- or 4-part seal. The surviving fragment comprises of a flat disc of lead with an integral rivet projecting from the reverse. The front of the disc is stamped with a crowned F flanked by fleur-de-lis, all in low relief. Dimensions: diameter 17.3mm; thickness 7.2mm; weight 2.48g. The function is revealed by the imprint of a closely woven textile trapped between the parts of the cloth seal when it was attached. Suggested date: post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Lead cloth seal. A cast pair of discs linked by an integrally cast strip, with a hidden lug probably involved in the attachment of one disc to the other. Patinated One side, the larger disc, bears the stamped Roman numerals XIX. The other side bears a lattice pattern; this might be part of a portcullis motif (also known on a Yorkshire seal, appearing on both sides: Egan 1994 page 175, fig. 24 no. 107). Similar lettering appears on a cloth seal also bearing the date 1619 (ibid., page 173, fig. 22 no. 91), and the date of that object may be an apt guide to that of this example. Suggeste…

An incomplete lead cloth seal dating to the Medieval period. The cloth seal consists of two thin flat circular discs connected together at one edge by a rectangular strip. The cavity between the two discs is filled with depositional residue. The upper surface of one disc is decorated with what might be the remains of a legend, while the surface of the opposite disc is plain. The object measures 19.5mm in length, 12mm in width and is a maximum of 4mm thick. It weighs 4.39 grams.

A fragment of a cast lead armorial cloth seal. The fragment consists of a strip, cut or torn across the diameter of a circular seal, 32 mm long, 14.5 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick, weighing 6 g. The fragment is damaged at both ends, so the precise diameter of the seal is uncertain. The front face is decorated with a double-arched St Edward's crown over a Tudor rose, within a ring of pellets. The back face is strengthened by a thicker band of lead, 3 mm wide, across the diameter of the seal. An incomplete lead two-part cloth seal, probably dating to the Medieval or Post-Medieval period. The cloth seal consists of two circular discs attached to each other. The obverse disc is plain with a raised central area and a recessed circumerential boarder which is compressed at one edge. The reverse disc is also plain. An iron pin consisting of a single piece of of iron wire runs vertically through the centre of the object and is secured in place by its two twisted terminals. The lead seal measures 21.5mm in diameter and 5mm in thickness. It weighs 13.01 grams.

Lead two-disc Medieval to Post Medieval cloth seal. One disc with a central rivet the other with a corresponding hole, linked by an integral strip of lead folded back to back and impressed with alnage marks on both sides. The rivet is impressed with a plain cross with a pellet in each quarter, all within a beaded circle. The other side has an equal-ended ship, rigged around a central mast. Circa AD1350-1724 but most likely early Post Medieval.
