Post Medieval lead cloth seal, c. 16th century AD. The seal measures 16mm in diameter and weighs 2.0g. The seal is very worn and is a small fragment. On the front of the fragment there is the bottom of a 'V' on the left hand side which is then followed by a raised circular line which would have continued underneath any other inscription, encircling the central emblem. The emblem here seems to form a shield shape, similar to those found on the Colchester Dutch community broad seals found in Egan, 1994, Lead Cloth Seals - occasional paper, no's 27, 28 and 31, pg 164-5. The rever…

Post medieval lead 4-disc cloth seal, mesuring 24.5x13.5mm and weighing 4.47g. Diameters: 10mm//13.5mm//13.5mm//11mm [SEA]/RCH/ED // - // crown over fleur-de-lis, I R to sides // - The crowned fleur-de-lis and IR stamp dates this seal to the reign of James I. Geoff Egan comments that this often (but probably not exclusively) appears with Devon stamps. Cf. Egan 1994, Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum, p.24 and p.159 no.6. Disc 1 is stamped 'searched' - examined for quality. Cf. Egan 1994 p.78 and p.181 no.204 & p.86 and p.184 no.244.

Post medieval two-part lead cloth seal depicting a crown over a portcullis on disc two, with no legend. It is poorly struck. It is 13mm in diameter and weighs 1.94g. -//crown over portcullis Geoff Egan comments: It is late 16th century and apparently an alnage issue. The rather cartoon version of the heraldic motifs, however, suggests it may be a contemporary counterfeit, set illictly on a textile to avoid the cloth tax and/or the quality inspection. Much more interesting to have dark dealings than the system ticking away routinely. Salisbury Museum Medieval Catalogue 3 (2…

Draped figure facing within pellet border, holding sword. Post medieval two-part lead weaver's/ clothier's seal 20.2mm in diameter and 30.7mm in length (including the arm). It weighs 7.20g. The inscription is as follows: DL//HB privy mark with roses, within a beaded border. Initials of the owner with a privy mark was a common inscription. Disc one of a two disc post medieval lead cloth seal, measuring 17.9x20.1mm and weighing 4.46g. The cloth seal depicts an ox (apparantly a quality symbol) with AV above, for the city name (Augsberg, South Germany). This also appears across the beast's body as AVGSPVRG. The cloth seal is for a fustian (mixed linen and cotton fabric), Augsburg fustians being among the most common of all cloth seals found in this country. Dates to end of 16th century (possibly)/ early 17th century.

Incomplete Post Medieval lead cloth seal weighing 3.87g and measuring 21x23mm in diameter. The seal is two sided. Much of disc 2 and the connecting strip are missing. Within a circular border on disc 1 is IC, with a bar above the later letter. Because the upper bar is higher in relief than the lower section of the 'C', Nick Griffiths comments that the original die appears to have been recut, changing the 'C' to, probably, a 'T'. The small tail at the bottom left hand curve of the 'C' is damage. Small sections of two other circular borders for neighbouring seals are present. The r…

Two fragments of a Post-Medieval cloth seal from Wesel in Germany. These are almost certainly two parts of the same four part cloth seal. The double perforations in each are secondary and may indicate an attempt to re-attach the two most important parts of the seal to a cloth of bale after the origiinal seal was broken off. One is of a lead/tin alloy and has a diameter of c.35mm. It is uniface with two squarish perforations 1.5mm and 2.5mm in diameter, diametrically opposed and near to the edge of the disc. On the obverse is an ornate shield with three weasels courant two and o…

Fragment of post medieval lead cloth seal, very worn and thin with no inscription remaining by which to identify it. It is rather large, c.23mm in diameter, and very thin, 0.7mm. It is probably an inner disc from a four-part seal as one arm projects outwards (another may be broken off). Weighs 1.15g. 16th/ 17th century.

An incomplete disc 1 from a lead four- or two-part cloth seal, dating probably to the 16th/ 17th century. No stamp is visible, but the cloth impression is on both faces very clear (and particularly on the face with the rivet, which also curiously appears to have a rim). It measures 20.9mm in diameter and weighs 4.25g.

An incomplete and very probably 3-part post medieval lead cloth seal. It is 23mm in diameter and max width, and 29mm in incomplete length. The cloth seal is from the alnage system and depicts the Stuart Arms of Britain with IR to either side, on one face. It may well have had 1611 above the arms, though this part of the cloth seal is now missing. On the reverse, the smaller disc with the rivet on one face has a series of incised lines crossing each other on its reverse face. The third and missing disc may well have had the place name of origin. This cloth seal is comparable with no…

Very worn Dutch post-1815 seal for Customs and Excise, copper alloy and ?lead, and rather squashed at the sides. They are quite common in this country and went on all kinds of goods. The main side has the arms of Orange in a shield - a lion rampant brandishing a sword, on a field with rectangles. The other side - illegible here - often has R & A = Dutch initials of C & E. It measures 20x17x4mm and weighs 9.61g.

Lead two-part cloth seal, weighing 5.18g and 18mm in diameter. Inclusive of loop it is 24mm long. Geoff Egan writes : This one is not familiar, and quite a complicated privy mark, in which I think I can read (in alphabetical order) the initials CERV, though there seems to be more than this - not a regular round stamp (possibly two superimposed??). The style of mark, presumably that of a weaver/clothier, is mid C16th to mid C17th.
