The obverse shows the name of the searcher, reading over two lines: RICHA[RD]/GRIC[ ]. The reverse is very worn and only the number 2 is visible. This belongs to a series of seals with rectangular parts, all having the full name of the searcher on one side, and on the other a proforma stamp for length, weight and width of the particular textile (Egan, 1994, 86). The searcher concerned is probably the same Richard Grice who was a cloth searcher on the River Cald…

A Post-Medieval lead cloth seal, probably issued during the reign of James I to William II (AD 1603-1702). The seal comprises to circular discs joined by a tab at one edge. The opposite edge on both discs is incomplete, indicating that this was possibly a four-disc seal. One disc is decorated with a crowned thistle. The other disc is worn, but an unclear curved line is visible. Compare SOM-166D1D and SUR-17B384 Although no direct parallel has been idenitfied for this seal, the crowned thistle frequently appeared on alnage seals in this period, see for example Egan (1994: 178, no. 141).
