Post medieval lead alloy cloth seal. Fragment of a two or four part seal consisting of the central plug of lead, circular in section, withthe front disk and part of the back disc attached. The front is stamped with the portcullis badge of the Tudors, surrounded by a legend, mositly illegible reading: [...]E[...]M[...] . The portcullis was "the main design for alnage seals in the late Tudor period... and continued in use into the early seventeenth century" (Egan 1995:9). Alnage seals indicated the cloth had been checked for quality by a Crown official and that the subsidy (tax) h…

Half of a four disc lead alloy cloth seal dating from the Post medieval period (1575 – 1800). It consists of two circular discs joined next to each other. One has a large circular hole in the centre and is not decorated. The other is decorated with a thistle. The thistle possibly indicats a connection with the Dukes of Lennox and Richmond, who controlled the alnage from 1605 onwards (see Finds research Group Datasheet 3, fig. 13a). A slight tab projects from the disc with the hole, opposite the other disc. The edge of the second disc looks to be a post depositional break. It is 26.5…

A cast lead object, possibly the folded connecting strip from an incomplete lead cloth seal of Post-Medieval date. It is rectangular in form and section, folded in half to form a small loop at one end and terminating at the other in old breaks. On one face (front?) are the remains of an impressed or stamped oval shaped mark of uncertain form. The entire object measures 18.01mm in length, 14mm in width, 6.62mm in thickness, and weighs 10.53g. This object might plausibly be the folded connecting strip from a Post-Medieval cloth seal similar to examples published from London (see Eg…

A Post Medieval  colth seal  dating to 1571 AD. This type of seal with the rivets and corresponding holes went on each newly woven textile. This exampe is from a  Dutch-immigrant community Colchester seal. The inscription reads: DUYT(S) (?7)O CRUI(S) / (BAY)E VA(N) / (C)OLCESTER /(1)57(1) - ie 'Dutch seventy [refers to warp thread-count]  cross [refers to weave - ??twill] bay [cf. baize] of Colchester [founded] 1571.'  Geoff Egan notes that the use of Dutch suggests a first-generation immigrant milieu. These particular seals are so far only known from London.

A lead alloy sub-circular bag or cloth seal. The seal retains both the front and back parts of the seal but the joining hinge is missing. The back disc is smaller than the front disc. The front disc is depicted with St George and the dragon (only part of the dragon is visible). This stamp shows it was approved by an alnager, a person who ensured that the right length of cloth was supplied in the bale before giving the bale the seal as a mark of approval so it could be sold on. The seal dates from the 17th century, until the alnager's post was abolished in 1699.

A circular lead cloth seal fragment of seventeenth to eighteenth century date. It consists of one disc with a fragment of connecting strip, but the second disc is missing due to old beaks. There are traces of decoration on one face, with a pellet border surviving around part of the circumference, and a cluster of pellets forming a daisy motif near the centre. This appears to be above an applied T shape, with a small star to the left. The disc measures 18.58mm in diameter, 1.33mm in thickness, and weighs 3.77g.
