A cast lead cloth seal of probable post-medieval date. The fragmentary oval seal is the first disc from a two disc seal. It measures 22.3mm by 21.6mm by 3.1mm and weighs 4.8g. On one side there is a stamped crowned shield. Illegible writing is visible to one side. On the flattened rivet there is a zero and part of another number (possibly a seven) or letter adjacent. Stuart Elton kindly commented on this record: This is a cloth seal from Gdansk (Danzig). On a similar seal Egan (1994:113, no. 328) comments: The arms are those of Gdansk (the crosses are pattee in most versions). T…

A cast lead cloth seal of post-medieval date. The two-piece seal measures 29.9mm by 22.5mm by 4mm and weighs 9.4g. On the external face of disc one there are lightly incised marks, possibly the letters XI. On the external face of disc two a monogram has been stamped surrounded by a border of pellets. This appears to be a G overlying an H. This cloth seal is likely to be the personal seal of a clothier, weaver or searcher.

Two-part lead cloth seal. There are two, roughly circular faces. These are folded tightly together and joined by a small strip of metal. The seal has a design on one face and is undecorated on the other. Around the outside edge of the decorated face is an inscription enclosed by a thin raised border. However, parts of this are either highly eroded or missing altogether, rendering the inscription practically illegible. Only the letters SV and possibly L are visible. In the centre of this is the arms of England surmounted by a crown. To the left of the arms is a pellet and possibly a su…

Post Medieval lead two disk cloth seal with a large letter A flanked with annulets and with an annulet below all within a pellet border on one side and with a pinecone in a cusped border on the other. The tab that would have joined the two disks is missing from an old break. It is 21.2mm by 18.5mm and 3.6mm thick; it weighs 6.87 grams. The design indicates it is from a mixed linen-warp and cotton weft fabric from Augsberg, Germany, dating to the 16th or 17th century. Cf. Egan (1994) nos.308-10.

Post Medieval two part cloth seal with two disks joined by a tab which is bent down towards the back disk. The male disk is stamped with WG or WC with a dot in the centre of the C and a triangle, possibly a 2 or a 4, above, all within a pellet border. This is probably a 'privy' or 'merchants' mark. On the other side it has broken around the hole in the centre through which the tab from the male side would have projected before being stamped flat. There are traces of design around the edge, possibly including a crown or flower but most is obscured by the break and the bent over tab. I…

Post Medieval two part cloth seal with two disks joined by a tab. The back disk is plain on the outer side and had a central projection on the inner side which fitted through the hole in the centre of the second disk and was stamped flat to hold them together; about four fifths of this back disk remains. Only about a half of the front disk, including the stamped flat projection remains. It was stamped with a 'privy' or 'merchants' mark in the form of a number four with an open point and an elongated central bar with a cross bar near the top; most of the mark is missing to the old bre…

Post Medieval four part cloth seal with two pairs of two disks. The disks are adjacent to each other with the smaller disks of each pair attached together by a rivet from one which is pushed through the other and pressed flat. The larger disks were probably joined by a tab opposite the rivetted disks but this is now missing. The small disks appear plain although there is a raised circle on the side where the rivet is squashed, the circle is irregular inside and may have had a desgin or it may simply be the result of flattening the rivet. One larger disk has the inscription *TAVNTON en…

Two lead Post-Medieval two-part cloth seals of the same design. The seals would have originally been formed from two disks of lead attached together via an integral strip folded in two. These disks are designed to be secured to one another via an integral rivet on the reverse of one, which has been passed through a circular hole in the centre of the other. However, both are now incomplete. The surviving outer faces have the raised letters R B/F W surrounded by five cinquefoils. However, only one of these disks and a small section of the ajoining strip survives. The outer face of this has the raised letters R H with an interlace design between and interweaving the two. It is presumably the personal seal of a clothier, weaver or searcher. The initials do not appear in Egan's (1994) 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum'. An incomplete cast lead cloth seal dating from the sixteenth or early seventeenth century. The broadly circular seal has a diameter of 18.1mm, a thickness of 4.6mm and weighs 5.2g. It is the first disc from a two-part seal from the German city of Augsburg. On the exterior face there is a letter A. The motif on the rivet on the other side is unclear, but by comparison with other similar seals it would have been a pine cone (see for example nos. 308 and 309 in Egan's 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum'). This was the heraldic badge of the city.

The external face depicts a shield on which there is a upwards pointing sword with two mullets on each side and a cross pattee above. These are the arms of the city of Haarlem in Holland. Around the arms is the legend HAERL[EMS GOET], meaning goods from Haarlem. On the rivet is the number 20, which indicated the length in Dutch ells of the cloth being certified. Around the rivet is the impression of a finely woven cloth.
