A lead cloth seal probably of Medieval date. This artefact weighs 7.71g, however this weight includes dried mud that can be seen filling the space between the two discs. The discs are sub-circular in shape. They have a diameter measurement of 21.5mm on one axis and, due to the object having been bent, a bent measurement of 20.0mm when measured with a flexible dress-maker’s tape-measure on the axis at 90 degrees from the previously given dimension. Each disc seems to have had a thickness of c.0.7mm and together they have a maximum thickness of 3.6mm with the dried mud between them. …

A lead cloth seal of Post-Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1750. It is a two part seal, consisting of two discs, linked by a rectangular strip of lead (now missing), one disk with a central, circular perforation, the other with a central, integral rivet. The seal is closed by folding it in two, passing the rivet on one disc through the perforation on the other and crimping the two together. It is also possible that these are the two outer discs of a four-disc seal. The rivet on this example is embossed with a raised letter R and is marked on the flat face with deeply indented letters H …

One disc from a post-medieval lead cloth seal. The disc is decorated with a large crowned letter 'h' in a wreath of leaves. A worn, illegible inscription surrounds. This seal is probably identical to one from Roughton, Lincolnshire (LIN-A05668). The legend surrounding this seal reads HENRICVS REX. The legend probably refers to Henry VII because of the ?open (non-imperial) crown (or possibly Henry VI)? The crown is somewhat worn but if it was arched it which would make the seal late Henry VII or Henry VIII. It is probably an alnage seal, though it could be a customs one (also presum…

Lead cloth seal. A pair of cast discs linked and clenched together, with a stamped symbol on the face of one disc. The symbol is a broad arrow, and may denote Crown property - exactly the same convention was carried over to the War Office and it is thus best known today as marking Ordnance Survey datum points. The medieval use of the symbol in this region is known from its use on the base of a wooden plate found preserved in garderobe fills associated with a 15th-century building at Lurk lane, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire (Armstrong et al. 1991, pages 174-5, fig. 121 no. 949). An incomplete lead cloth seal of medieval date. The seal is of the two disc type with only one disc complete and the second only partly intact. The surviving disc has been stamped with a small hand or shell devise though some other fainter marks are also present though these can no longer be determined. All that remains of the second disc are two extremely worn oval fragments both bearing signs of having been stamped though the features are again indeterminable. A slight protrusion on the edge of the complete disc may represent the strip which joined the two discs. The metal is a l…

A two-disc, lead-alloy cloth seal. The closing rivet is double, like a split pin. The face of the seal shows the legend 'nam' in lombardic script within an outer circle of pellets. The 'n' of the legend breaks the pellet circle on the left hand edge of the seal. The central upright and right hand upright of the 'm' continue below the base of the letter, bending at an angle of 45 degrees to the right and reaching to the outer pellet circle. There is an additional pellet within the outer circle below the 'a' of the legend. The lettering can also be read the otherway up as 'wer'. The sea…
