A fragment of a post-Medieval lead cloth seal of early 18th-century date (1702-1714). The surviving disc with joining strips/tabs was probably part of a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. The disc bears a female bust facing left, that of Queen Anne (1702-1714) with the legend ANNA RE[ ]. The bust is surrounded by a border of short raised transverse lines. The rear face is plain. A complete post-Medieval two disc lead-alloy cloth seal (c. 1550-c. 1700). The seal is formed of two discs linked by a rectangular tab. One disc had an integral projecting rivet on the inner side, the other a hole through the centre. (The rivet went through the cloth, through the other seal and was stamped flat to hold the seal to the cloth.) The back disc (with rivet) is plain. The projecting end of the rivet has raised a merchant's/privy mark.
